i just run a very quick g25 model of them excluding the 3 outliers they can pretty much be modeled as 73.3% lazarides Greece LBA 20.3% Logkas MBA and 6% Isparta BA at a distance of 0.02695082

So these are the 58 samples most of them seem to have a mycaenean profile but there are 3 outliers among them. 144054 who seems to be a west anatolian the 143949 who clusters closely with the mygdalia samples so therotically he coulb be a northern ancient greek or an illyrian and lastly 143997who clusters with iron age sicillians

I went on exploremydna and used the map feature to see some of the Italian samples i missed out on all these years, and its fascinating how easy it is to go from a mycenaen-like to a south italian-you just need to trade in some of the anatolean neo maybe 15 pct give or take and add in some extra Iranian-Neo/Caucasus, steppe and maybe a few percent Natufian. But the bulk of what you get in exchange is the Iranian-Caucasus Hunter Gatherer type genes, from what I saw. That seems to be the pattern. Sorry if I'm a bit off topic, but i found it fascinating.

I want to get this off my chest, with all due respect for Levantines-if the extra Middle East blood found in south Italy really came from the Levant it would’ve been an even split between the extra Iran Neo and natufian, but the bulk of the extra “middle eastern” blood seems to be Iranic( with a little Natufian added, so maybe these Anatolians had some Levant type ancestry in them). If it was from a Levantine source the amount of added natufian would’ve been much higher in proportion.
I’m just throwing this out there to address the issue we have with t-rolls who like to spam false info about south Italians. I personally wouldn’t have any issue whatsoever if it came from levantines as I’m not a backwards racist…tbh I wouldn’t mind finding out I’m 100 pct Lebanese! The Levant has a very rich, successful history.

The ancestry seen in modern Southern Italians does not appear to come from the Levant at all. It instead resembles the Imperial Romans of central Italy, who, in turn derived their ancestry from an Aegean source - most likely through the conduit of Magna Graecian colonization. This topic has been discussed fairly extensively here.

Exactly, if they did mix with levantines there’d be more natufian in the samples I saw.

Typically Natufian is an outgroup in gold-standard tools like qpAdm, considering it is a very distal population. When people model modern Middle Easterners, they tend to use BA samples on the Left components.

@davef
Since you've been out of the loop, not sure if you know this. But you may be more Italian than you previously thought. Considering European Jewish populations can be modeled with a large Italian-like component; something north of 60% IIRC from a recent study. Likely from their time as diaspora in the Roman Empire.

Hahaha I'm up late, was at a friend's house gaming for over 12 hours and just got home. I'm not suprised tbh, it would only make sense given the time spent in ancient Rome. There's an obvious southern europe vibe in the euro Jewish genome and it can't be solely from Spain as not all Jews have ancestors that went to Spain, so knowing that there's a strong history in Rome it would make sense that it's from Italy. I was still here in 2019 when the Philistine samples were out and they didn't do much to change the ancient Israelite genomes so they're out of the picture. So they were full Levanitines when they reached Rome, I'm willing to bet before taking local Roman partners.
PS I read up on the Erfurt (sp) study and one group of Jews had more Slavic ancestry than the other, and I'm willing to bet the extra Slavic ancestry came from the former mixing with the latter.

In my models there has been no Natufian in any Italian population, once bronze/Iron age Anatolian is used as a source. The Greeks of the ancient era did in fact mix heavily with and geographically absorbed the western coast of of Anatolia, which can explain the relative positioning of southern italians/imperial romans/ancient greeks on a west eurasian PCA. I think it's more apt to call this background "Northern Mediterranean" or "Aegean" ancestry rather than "Middle Eastern" as these Anatolians were intermediate between and closest to modern Greek islanders and Armenian Caucasians.

This should come as no surprise as the Greeks historically hosted massive colonies with very large city states in southern Italy, where as the Levant had no close affiliation with Italy, no documented case historically or archaeologically of colonization or large Levantine communities and is much more geographically distant comparatively to Greece/Anatolia.

I'll admit, I must've looked at some bad models. They didn't use Anatolians whatsoever. And what you say makes sense, Greece is very close to Turkey geographically and it was easy for Greeks to pick up Anatolian ancestry there.
I also don't support the Levantine theory bc that would require a huge number of people from the Levant mixing with the locals, and I can't think of any motivation that would drive them to do that. It's silly if you think about it-imagine a huge group of people in ancient Lebanon randomly coming up with the idea of risking death, sailing several hundred miles for the sole purpose of mixing with southern Italian people, leaving everything behind just for that. It makes no sense. I would expect the sole motivator to travel all that way would be for trade and commerce.

Don't get me wrong, statistically speaking there had to have been some mixing back then between Levantines and Romans (we know from the study Jovialis pointed out that Jews likely picked up some Roman blood back when they were fully Levantine) but the math doesn't support any significant impact on the southern Italian genome overtime i.e. a half Phoenician half Italian would find a full Italian partner, and their child is 1/4 Phoenician, that child's child is 1/8 Phoenician, etc. This is from the host population being bigger than the guest population.

This simple math concept is what alot of these t-rolls miss out on btw. Sorry if i sound garbled up, I went to sleep very late last night and not 100 pct clear in my head atm.

Running into some difficulties with conversion with the version provided by the Reich lab. I am sure they'll be in the next iteration of AADR.

Perhaps if I convert it to PLINK and then back to a regular Eigenstrat format may do the trick. But I don't have the time at the moment.

Yes, you understand it fairly clearly. While nobody purports that there has never been a case of admixture between Levantine and Italian individuals, the population genetics make it clear that any impact from these relations were not significant enough to be visible in the modern Italian genetic structure. The structure which is instead retained seems to primarily originate from populations already present in the Italian Iron age (Italics and Greeks). The reality as you mentioned is that the Roman population of Italy was not only much larger, but there is also the additional aspect that such admixtures between foreigners would have been concentrated in urban areas which are known demographic sinks sporting low fertility. By comparison, most individuals today, regardless of ethnicity, are descended from rural populations from smaller towns which consistently furnished higher fertility rates than their urban counterparts.

FWIW, I can model myself as 80% LBA Greek with additional Steppe. But I maintain it is truly more attrbuted to Southern Italian BA + Steppe-rich Balkan influence that was re-enforced by later Greek enrichment,

At any rate, let us get back on topic.

What i have noticed so far is that the greeks during Hellenistic times and onwards didn't just become more west anatolian but they seem to have absorbed some east anatolian /mesopotamian like ancestry plus some additional logkas ancestry.I run some models by using archaic and classical era greeks from the tenea study and they have some extra steppe compared to LBA greeks.

That’s interesting, how do you think they get that extra east Anatolian ancestry?

If this is based on G25, I’d be cautious about overinterpreting it. G25 is serviceable as a broad PCA-distance heuristic, but it is not the same thing as modeling polymorphic SNP data against informative outgroups. Historically, some degree of admixture between Greeks and eastern populations during the Hellenistic period is plausible. But for mainland Greeks, the clearest signal I see in Roman-era Tenea is Anatolian-related input, not a demonstrable East Anatolian or Mesopotamian shift. More broadly, the pattern may be better understood as Anatolians becoming more Greek-like over time, rather than mainland Greeks acquiring substantial Mesopotamian-like ancestry. Lazaridis demonstrated the shift of Anatolians becoming more Greek-like overtime.

Did Greece overtime go from Mycenaean to Mycenaean plus western Anatolian? I have to read up on this.
