Exactly, Russia agreed to gurantee for a sovereign state, independent from both blocks. At the same time the agreement was made that NATO wouldn't expand Eastwards. Therefore the conditions under which the guarantee was given have changed and the initial agreements broken. That's exactly the cause of the problem.

No reason for invasion, none. Whatever rationalization the Russians and apologists are using to justify the war are useless. Now let's assume for the time being that the Ukranians recapture their territory. What then?
1. Will Russia pay reparations for the damage they caused?
2. Who will rebuild Ukraine?
3. What will happen with Donetsk and Donbass? Or the Ukrainians in the USSR?
4. Will Ukraine join NATO?
5. Will NATO want them?
6. Will Ukraine re-build their nuclear arsenal? They were stupid to give it up. The guarantees were not worth the paper they were printed on.
7. Europe will become energy diversified because of the invasion and will never trust Russia again.
8. Russian gas pipeline to China and the Far East will take a long time to build. Will the Chinese trust the Russians not to use energy as a weapon?
9. What will happen to Russia itself? Putin is probably on the way out, who will replace him? Will their campaign to destabilize western democracies end?
