I think this highly educated argument made in the first post is nonetheless missing the finer points of religious thought. At best it could be argued ritual cannibalism has persisted as a subconscious cultural relic, not that it is glorified.

Those areas are very specific, some stayed under the goths for less than 10 years while centuries under the Byzantines. If it was the Normans I think Sicily would be much higher and that isn't the case
Unless there's samples from the Cilento area from south Campania I feel they are just going to turn out the usual Latin-like and not what might be a Native Southern Italian, Bay of Naples is a few steps away from Rome after all. Hence why I don't understand this tiptoeing in the immediate areas...

Is there going to be a comprehensive study on Sicily/Calabria any time soon? Not sure how anyone can draw conclusions on Southern Italian genetics without these two regions.
After the recent paper on the Etruscans the darkest corners of the internet are running amok with wild theories about Southern Italians, in particular that they are rootless people who where imported as slaves from the Levant among other theories that probably can't be posted here.
