Immigration Largest Italian, Irish, Polish, Greek cities in the world outside their home country

My father was the only one of eight to marry a Greek but he grew up in Cheyenne Wyoming not necessarily the hotbed of Greek American culture. You’re right I know tons of Greeks from Chicago and NY that remained ethnically insular. I was actually married to a Greek from Chicago and her parents...

Immigration Largest Italian, Irish, Polish, Greek cities in the world outside their home country

My entire paternal side is mixed Greek/German, Greek/Irish, Greek/Scottish, Greek/Polish. Greeks tended to mix with Irish but also with Polish oddly enough.

David Reich Southern Arc Paper Abstract

Yeah I tend to agree the Neolithic farmers seem to be undersold. Why did pre Greek civilization begin in two areas where there was minimal IE admixture? How come it didn’t start in the Helladic NE where there was much higher Steppe?

David Reich Southern Arc Paper Abstract

Yeah I tend to agree that the Neolithic folks get undersold. They set the stage for whatever happened in Crete and mainland Greece during the Bronze Age.

I honestly don’t understand your point. Are you saying that J2A isn’t Euro related? What about G which has been around since the Neolithic. I honestly feel like you’re trying to draw a connection between haplogroips and genetic admixture.

David Reich Southern Arc Paper Abstract

[RIGHT] Just to be clear I don’t believe he was saying all mainland Greeks feel superior to Greeks from other regions. On AG there were a lot of mainland Greeks interested in their own genetic history (me included) as were there Cypriots, Dodecanese, Cretans, Anatolians, Pontics, etc. Before I...

Wow that’s a pretty definitive statement but don’t think it’s true. Btw this sounds like an Apricity response.

David Reich Southern Arc Paper Abstract

I hate to get into these discussions. You remember that Cypriots are a mix of Levantine populations and Mycenean settlers from late Bronze Age and genetically cluster with Levantine groups; predominantly Lebanese. Cretans tend to cluster with other Aegean Islanders. I’ve met “dark” Islanders and...

Yes you’re right about West Taygetus. My first cousin’s mother was from a village on the Western side and they’re super Slavic looking. Arachova is a good example. Pre Slavic Peloponnesians were most likely similar (genetically) to present day Cretans (not Dodecanese). Modern Peloponnesians like...

David Reich Southern Arc Paper Abstract

Mani has some connection to Crete genetically. There’s evidence that Cretan pirates may have had contact with Maniotes during the Ottoman period. Deep Mani and Tsakonia seem to to cluster with one another and pretty close to Crete. Much of it may have to do with isolation and lack of Slavic...

David Reich Southern Arc Paper Abstract

I just don’t see any genetic evidence of it in modern Peloponnesians. There may have been some dispersion to the Eastern half of the Peloponnese during the latter Byzantine period as the West was under Frank or Venetian control. Maybe you’re right to the more populous coastal regions but...

David Reich Southern Arc Paper Abstract

That was my major beef with AG folks where’s the evidence of any Levantine or Anatolian migration during the classical or Hellinistic period. Based on my reading it was the other way around. Why in the hell would there be resettlement in one of the least inhabitable places (Greek mainland) in...

Preview: Upcoming Ancient Greek Transect (Mesolithic to Medieval) from Biomuse.

From what I’ve read and heard there’s negligible genetic connection between many of these paleothic groups and modern Brits.

I know that’s the irony. I read this several years back and wondered why it wasn’t mentioned more at the time.

    Is anthrogenica.com gone?

Interesting because you would think by the middle Bronze age the IE admixture would have moved South into the Peloponnese.

    Lack of G2a in Basque

I honestly believe that whoever mentioned that surviving G2A in Europe is associated with higher elevations and herding is onto something. It certainly rings true with my paternal line.

    G2a origins: what to believe?

Probably your haplogroup is farmer derived.

    G2a origins: what to believe?

I'm from a paternal line of mountain folk in mainland Greece with G2a2a (PF3237) and i've traced my line back to the 16th century. The subclade is found in both bellbeaker and barcin samples.
