Constantinople was named after Constantine the Great the Roman emperor. The Constantine is Latin not Greek and initially Latin was the franca lingua. With time Greek took her place but it's citizens considered themselves as Romans not Greeks which persisted through the Ottoman rule. The empire was know as the Roman Empire not the Byzantine. The term Byzantine was coined after the end of the realm. Modern Greeks are decanted from these Romans which were simply Christians that were living in the area of Greece and modern Turkey. Many of them didn't speak Greek but Turkish, Slavic, Aromanian and Albanian.
I think that Albanian (or Illyrian) mountain peoples came Greece and Macedonia and assimilated Greek Culture and Hellenized. I think that sizeable percentage of today's Greeks E-V13 descent from this people.they have a lot og ancient greek dna.

Boy there are Fallmayers everywhere and in different eras. Greeks were always welcoming to non-natives. They had colonies all over the place in which they mix with the natives. Artisans came to Athens from all over the known world and mixed with the natives.
As far as the Albanians/Arvanites and the Vlachs they were pretty insular communities for the longest time. They maintained their linguistic, cultural and land holdings within their communities until the 1930s when they started intermarrying with the Greek speakers. In the 1960s there were Arvatites in the town where I was born that spoke only Arvanitika. Now of course the situation is completely different and the different communities intermix with wild abandon.
a) The official language of the eastern roman empire was Greek since 600 CE when Heraclius established the change from latin and also kept the title Vasileus ( king in greek) instead of Caesar.
b) The greek language is the oldest european language which has never ceased to be spoken (unlike e.g Hebrew which had to be reconstructed ) in the greek peninsula ( and in greek inhabiting enclaves from anatolia to modern ukraine to sicily and south italy e.g griego)
c) The inhabitants of the eastern roman empire were refering to themselves as romioi to signify that the empire was the rightful continuation of the roman empire ( after the fall of rome to the barbarians) and not the francs, holy roman empire etc.
d) The west ( whether it was the italian city/states of genova, venice or the francs, the holy roman empire) was always refering to the eastern roman empire as the kingdom of the greeks. E.g in the 4th crusade and the sack of Konstantinopole the
e) Every modern genetic study in the highest impact factor journals ( and even in the commercial dna companies) shows that the greeks are the direct descendants of the ancient greek inhabitants. Something which is expected as there never was population replacement ( e.g like in the US or australia) or mass migration in the greek peninsula. The slavic ( which are essentially balkan and not slavic in any other way that language) albanian or aromanian admixture is less than 10%.
