As is also true of modern Mongolians.

See:
https://www.archaeology.org/news/7423-190221-yak-milk-drinkers

"According to a Science News report, adults who lived in what is now Mongolia some 3,000 years ago drank the milk of cows, yaks, and sheep, even though they did not possess genes for digesting lactose. Christina Warinner of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History and her colleagues found milk proteins in dental plaque obtained from skeletons recovered from 22 burial mounds left by the Deer Stone people of Mongolia’s eastern steppes. The Deer Stone people may have been able to digest milk due to bacteria in the gut, just as present-day Mongolians are, Warinner explained. "

So what other ancient pops may have done the same thing?

I think I recall that central Asians also drink milk with no ill effects even though they don't carry the gene.

This 2017 paper sort of summarizes what we know about the LP gene. I'd have to read it again to refresh my recollection, but I think that's what they said.

It would be interesting to know what gut bacteria they have and the source. Then no need for all that Lactaid milk or tablets. :)

Just anecdotally, it's all more complicated than people used to believe, and I do think gut bacteria have a lot to do with it. I never drank much milk, although I had to have it with my oreos, :), and I liked warm milk before bed occasionally, but I happily consumed tons of cheese, including soft cheeses with a lot of lactose, and lots of ice cream, with no problem at all until I hit 35. Now I have to watch the quantity of cheese, ice cream, butter I consume. Yet, I have two copies of the LP gene.

This is a big news! Perhaps in the future doctors can cator gut bacteria to improve our diet. No more runs and stomach pain after lactose or gluten.

I remember speculating way back that modern Mongolians have to have "right" microbiome to be able to consume so many dairy products without being lactose persistent, mostly.

Problem Solved!

Look for it at your local Supermarket.

“The a2 Milk Company”

a2 Milk is a naturally occurring cows’milk.
contains only the A2 protein (A1 protein free)

From my fridge (bought by mistake)

I have 1 of the 2 variants for Lactase Persistance, wich should make me Tolerant, but i barely tolerate it. We know they had milk proteins on their dental plaque, but we dont know if they had Diarrhea... A lot of people are eating things that are not naturally made for them. Gluten and Herbs in general are a good universal exemple.

If they had persistent diarrhea it would have weakened them and left them unable to function in their active lifestyles. Plus, their descendants still have no LP gene, still drink milk, and have no problems with it.

So, no, that's not a valid objection.

Where the heck you get the idea that gluten is not generally tolerated is beyond me. If that were the case all the Italians and the French too would be dead. You could say the French Revolution was over bread. :)

As for herbs, they were medicine for 2000 years. Still are if you know what you're doing.

Nutrition is more complexe than that. A lot of people dont consider Diarrhea or Gastric problems that much. This is why people are ranging to extreme diet as Veganism or Carnivorism without reasoning. I'm a very active, i have a difficult physical job and i'm still eating Gluten and Lactose, for, i'm not still sure what reason. I think there is a cultural traith to think everything before the 20 century knows how to behave and how to select what food is good for them or not. About Gluten... The modern Gluten is selected for 99% of the Gluten protein wich make them very different that the one Neolithic people had. Only Ruminants, and Birds can digest most of the Antinutrients that are in Herbs like Cereals or Pseudo-Cereals. No animals can eat Beans. The fact that humans discovered Cooking and Fermenting doesn't make them protected against the fact that Plants have natural protections too.

When are you going to read some papers? Like the ones that document the alleles which were selected for so that people could consume gluten without bad side affects for example?

If you didn't get them, poor you.

So you have no clue on Nutrition. No humans have immunity over Phytic Acids or tolerance over Gluten wich is not digestible whoever you are. But i like that you downvoted my post for whatever reasons, people will juged by themselves of the credibility in game. The real question is, why is Meat related with random deceases, even type 2 diabetes... ( lol ) while Cereales are admired for whatever reasons in all epidemiological studies have seen so far.

Half Alp,

It's a CONSPIRACY!

How could you not know that?

It's a CONSPIRACY by SOUTHERNERS to degrade the diet of the holy Northern Europen Hunter-gatherers.

See how I understand your mindset?

I never, ever, give infractions for uninformed if not stupid comments devoid of proof, but I maintain my right to indicate that they were singularly unhelpful, especially when they're arrogantly expressed.

I also, btw, never downvote posts where I disagree with the conclusion but the reasoning was sound and it was supported by scientifically ascertained facts.

I'll make it easy for you: you're entitled to your own opinions, but NOT your own facts.

If for nothing else, newbies should not be confused.

Why do i have the feeling you consider most people as newbies. Nutrition is not your field, i dont even know why we have this discution, but the fact that you claimed the idea that some people could tolerate gluten without bad effects is clearly missleading. You should do more in depths investigations on the papers you take for granted before saying anything. And about conspiracy. It's laughable because not as far as 2012 Harvard said that Meat could cause type 2 Diabetes, Cancer and Heart Deceases just with an Epidemiological study. Why is Harvard never doing a study over Gluten? :()

I'm Swiss, not Northern European. Glad the bias finally comes out.

I'm not the one with a bias.

Just on an fyi basis, some of the most Nordicist, anti-Italian people I've ever met are German Swiss. Certainly, they're the ones who have treated me the worst in my life.

There's a blog on youtube by a half Swiss/half African American girl who went to Switzerland to go to school and what it was like. Old ladies spitting at her on the street, old men saying vile things to her. Horrifying.

You should try to find it.

Of course, there's lots of nice Swiss people too.

People should be judged, as per the Reverend Martin Luther King, on the merits of their characters, not accidents of birth.

You know, it's pretty funny how the t-rolls on this site either call me a Nordicist or an anti-Northern European.

When you're attacked by both extremes you know you're on the right road.

Why are you turning on Black people pity like it's something we should be receptive off. Your YT woman is lying clearly, i know my country, i'm from Swiss Alemania nobody is acting like you are saying, like most Germanic countries we keep everything inside instead of crying outside like Urban Americans. I like how you just turned your racist bias toward what the **** is from north, and apparently alemanic swiss now just to prove a point. What a disgrace, i dont want to ear anything else from you, this isn't worth. But i will remember this for the future.

I'm shaking in my boots I'm so afraid.

Listen I don't know if she's exaggerating or not, but it wouldn't at all surprise me based on my own experience.

When I was a teenager I went to spend a couple of weeks with my aunt in a town near Zurich. She and her husband were Italian migrants there.

I had to post a letter so I went to the post office. I speak no German, but obviously I spoke Italian, so, knowing that Italian was one of the official languages of Switzerland, I thought it would show more respect if I used Italian rather than English to make my inquiry.

He went apoplectic, started screaming at me, his face red with anger, and told me in broken Italian that this was Switzerland and if I couldn't learn Swiss Dutch I should go back to where I came from...I'd get no service there. I was so stunned, and sufficiently shy at that age, that I asked, in English, if English could be used. Then he served me.

My aunt later found out that he had made a sexual comment about me. No matter how "mature" I may have looked, I was 13, and dressed like a convent school girl on an afternoon pass. It was unpardonable. I swear, I blame him for the fact I wore huge sweaters until I was way into my twenties.

This was a man in his fifties if he was a day. It was disgusting. It may not sound like much to you, but it was the first time I'd ever been disrespected like that for my ethnicity. In my decades in America I have NEVER, NOT ONCE been disparaged in any way because I'm Italian. On the contrary, people are always thrilled to find out I'm from Italy, and want recipes, to talk about the art or the history or their trips to Italy, or even show me their pictures.

Does this mean that I'm going to assume every Swiss German is a jerk? Clearly not. I'm not an idiot. I judge each individual individually. I treat each person the way that person treats me and other people. That includes the fact that I'm not going to sit still when people abuse either me or members of any other group.

This is an article on the anti-Italian immigrant activity in Switzerland. I was there much later, so I can only imagine how horrible it was then.

"In 1970 there were a million immigrants in Switzerland, 54% of whom were Italians.[4] Rising friction with the indigenous majority even led to the creation of an "anti-Italians party" in 1963.[5] As every other immigrant group at the time, Italians were faced with a policy of forced integration, later satirised in the highly successful 1978 comedy film Die Schweizermacher (literally "The Swissmakers"), which went on to become the fifth most-watched film of all time in Switzerland[6]"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_immigration_to_Switzerland

There were even a few cases of the murder of Italian migrants to Italy during that period.

I don't get some of you people. Do you see Italians denying that some horrible Italians are racist, shouting horrible epithets at black calcio players or black public officials? No, you don't.

Stop with the damn hypocrisy.

I've seen those videos about african girls claiming being spit on the face by people of my own town. Cute that they dont go see the police but they make videos about it. Every ways to bring attention on you is good i guess. You are using Black people as a pity excuse wich was absolutely not the reason why we discussed at the beginning and i still dont understand why you started to talked about it. Why are we from Nutrition to racism towards Black people is a real question there... why are you talking about Swiss racism to discredit what i said goes beyond me.

I'm not American, i dont give a damn about racial problems or issues wich are a privileged people thing. My town was invaded by african migrants drug dealers not as far long, until this godamn socialist party finally take big positions on it.

I aint gonna comment over your story about this town in Zurich how much it doesn't make sense " Swiss Dutch, 70's, English, Broken Italian, Sexual Comment on a children "... I guess i should have pity because meh, random story from unknown peoples to discredit you on a national perspective.

No.
None of these people can drink milk. They don't drink milk they drink Kumiss-type beverages and dried milk paste, which is fermented (fermentation destroy lactose.)

Even lactose tolerant Steppe people seldom drank milk anyway. Herodotus talked all about it. They were after curd.

Articles like this me lose my faith in humanity. This is why we never should have taught proles how to read.
