    Your Impression Of The Future

    "Great Scott!"

I'd be really interested to know what peoples ideas are for what the future will be like.
I don't want to look too far ahead...about 50 years or so.

Ok, I'll be honest, the is an ulterior motive to my question.
I have started to write again (after many failures and non-starters!). The piece i'm working on is going to be set about 50 years in the future and although i do have many ideas, i'd like to know what others think.
It isn't really going to be a sci-fi piece...more bleak, but i don't want to give too much away. It will be set in London, but don't let that affect your answers. It's your ideas of the future, in the world around you.
As simple, as technical, as extravagent, as silly, as methodical as you want...don't have any boundaries!

    Peace
    Smoke.

Talking The Flight of the Condor

Hahaha, good to see you post again, and I can see it's getting trickier and trickier with each question you raise. You aren't the idea-sucking subroutine in the great matrix, are you ?

Okay, there are two parts to your question. Hence it's only fitting to reply in two parts disregarding the humor. Just one more before I go on. Why is it that I have these strange ideas about your smking sister avatar ? First, she doesn't seem real. Why ? He's too Nazi to be a catholic nun, not to say that catholics didn't colaborate with the Nazi's but definitely not the standard image, you know ? She also looks Asian. In fact I'd be hard pressed to say she's a woman at all. And what appears to be a stick of cigarette turns out to be a stick of kancho. All these make her cover so unbelieveable.

Part I: Back on topic, me honest response is 50 yrs from now is like a walk thru a heavily fogged forest, where both wonderful forest life and dangerous beasts coexist, suspended in a delicate balance. The herbivores are most of the time enjoying their fibrous meals, but the carnivores, lacking in vegetable fiber, but unable to digest plant based foods, but resort to violence to supplement their dietary needs. And after the bloodshed, the forest goes back to peaceful times as if nothing had happened; the rain and fog and fallen leaves will wash away and cover all memeories of dread.

Part II: A fairy tale doesn't seem to be what's on your mind. Some conspiracy, some greed, some evil plan to take over innocent victims always make good material for a popular story. Add a dash of trust and betrayal, of sex and savagery, a spicy twist and twang towards the end. How about...jerking the terminator plot; Japan and Germany have become underlings for the neo-Nazi nation Amrika pushing for maximum profit and control... but the remnants of the these two gang up to destroy the evil power...

Z: The fish in the water are happy.
H: How do you know ? You're not fish.
    Z: How do you know I don't ? You're not me.
H: True I am not you, and I cannot know. Likewise, I know you're not, therefore I know you don't.
Z: You asked me how I knew implying you knew I knew. In fact I saw some fish, strolling down by the Hao River, all jolly and gay.

If it's not happening already, the whole world will be officially ran by computers or some other type of machine.

Lexico, it is good to hear from you again...and it is also good to hear that you are just as insane as before (Nazi-nuns are a mild tangent in the mind of the great lex). You ideas are always welcommed and greatly received...as are those of eveyone else who posts in this topic. And as for sex and savagery, the story opend with the aftermath of sex...perhaps aftermath is a term that makes it seem violent...however it is more of a robbing rather than a violent act!
Mad perriot...you idea is not dissimilar to one i had about a new set of divisions within london..but i don't want to go into great detail, as i tend to jinx myself with talking of various plot ideas and 9 times out of 10...my work never gets finished.
I may indeed post a small fraction of the incredibly small progress that is my "untitled".
That is, if people would care to read it? and abviously, if the good people of this forum would kindly not plagerise.

All of yours idea are great and would appreciate many more!

In 50 years time, I think people will not be allowed to 'retire' from work, but have to keep working until... maybe 70? (realistically) And, old people will be given compulsory lethal injection (unless they live with their family).

    Well, you did say bleak...

My ideas are not as wacky, and some of them might be even happening already.

All the publications will go online like e-books, e-magazines, e-newspaper.
People will be able to buy prescription drugs out of veding machines 24/7, including food pills that taste like and make you feel like eating a real meal.
You will be able to use any currency you want to anywhere in the world.
Fox hunting will be legal again in England.

I'll stop here because I don't want to bore you.

I am not going to make any predictions of my own,
but I recommend you check out Alvin Toffler, who is American.
He is a sort of modern philosopher,I've seen some interviews with him. He's kind of hypnotising because he is so intense and clever.
He's published various books on what the future might be like. Not just technology, but how society might change as well...

This is almost happening now !

It's not that we aren't allowed to retire .... many of us don't want to - or can't afford to !

Personally, I have every intention of working until I'm seventy if I can (I'm not totally infirm just yet !)

Thanks to everyone for the idea...it's kinda freaky, because i tend to have similar ideas...especially e-newspapers...i actually thought of that whilst in the shower this morning (cue Twilight Zone music)!

However, i didn't slip whilst changing a light bulb, hit my head on the basin and invent the flex capacitor! (I think i've seen back to the future too many times!)

    Hi again,
I'm not sure about over population... of course it could happen, but I think it's more likely to be the other way around. In England (and Japan!) anyway, people are having less kids now, so it's unbalanced and there's a higher proportion of old people. I guess if it does go the way of the lethal injection, the population will actually go down. In fact, in a lot of European countries (I think Italy's the, um, 'worst offender' but don't quote me on that coz it might be out of date) it's below replacement level.

Of course, if people start having loadsa kids as well as living a good long time, yeah, overpopulation would be a problem.

Similarly if bits keep dropping off the land into the sea on a regular basis, like they tend to in England...

Yeah, I was wondering about the over population issue. Especially in those countries where there are quite a few senior citizens. But it's strange, according to some research people are living longer these days. Then again, I really don't know.

    my opinion about the future:

in 2055 , a lot of things will become electronic, like newspapers, etc, exept books ( because I CAN NOT READ A BOOK, OR lots of text on the computer.. ) as the restaurant in your company will be Microwave food, and not been made by cooks, why? because competition in live will be getting more more more, and more, so yeah you safe some money with using Good microwave food, isntead of a 30$ hour cook. look at airplanes, everything is microwave food ( hope it will be better in the future)

in the future, there will be a 3th world war, i think it will be finnished by then already, lets say a war of 10 years at least, i think we know where that will be ( dont want, but im afraid it will be) Nukes will be used! ( we have them, there getting better )

i think live will be a big mess, look at the children from now ( im just 20 but when i look at 5 year younger kids) no respect there is now, and i dont think they will learn that much in the future, as respect is an important thing you should learn on this age.

i think the older people around here, can tell better how it would look like, as im just 20. but for the next 10-20 years not much good is comming up.. maybe after it, when people just get sick of it...

sorry this is my MOST depresing post EVER..........

owww..the polar will melt, BUT the netherlands will still be there ( thats some postitive thing LOL) but for other things it will be bad, fishes are heading up North already to get colder water, i dont think it will go as fast in the movie "The day after tommorow" but i think a simular thing like this can happen in around 10 years time.

the world has always been GOOD/BAD Balance in life as we talked about it in the thread "why do people die" this is the same in the future i think, war will happen, but also peace will come, in the second world war there was war by german-japan ( etc) but now they are friend with the ones they fought with... this will maybe also the same with the Middle east, korea in 50 years time? and maybe some other country like australia would be the bad guy? i dont know, just i think there will always be groups, people like this!!

i hope i put my opinion in a bit Logical way.. LOL

Im not a world leader, and i do not want to be one, but this is the world im living in, so i Care about it

P.S i dont believe live wil be like star wars or fifth element in the next 50 years, but the sky will turn more brown then bleu...

America would no longer be a superpower. China would have collasped and part of it would be undercontrol of warlords , the rest controlled by a Japanese/South Korean super government. Europe would be a superstate and Winston Smith would be working on words trying to stay out of room 101.
Either that or if you beleive all the doom-mongers in the world no-one would be alive because we would have destroyed oureselves and the planet would be a happier place.

    Wink A Report from 2050

I decided to split my post into two or three segments here .. partly because of time restraints on myself ... and partly to allow you all to tell me to "Shut-Up!" if you wanted to - but I picked this up during one of my short trips in my (as yet imperfect...) Time Machine ..... :

    Washington Post

    December 31, 2050

    A Review of the Half-Century

    By Wendy Grabdik

My word ! Just, how 50 years have flown !

As is customary to so many of us in this business, I would like to push...sorry! ... offer you my assessment of the last fifty years, as we embark on the road towards the countdown to the twenty-second century.

And what a fifty years it has been !

Since its tragic beginnings, with the election of George W. Bush – through the even more tragic events of September 11, 2001 – this unforgettable half century has thrilled, horrified, frightened and delighted us all !

Let us just begin our review with a couple of notes to update us on today's news:

Two more car bombs exploded in Baghdad today, killing more than 12 Iraqi citizens and two peace keepers. Now that the population of Iraq has been whittled down to 2500 people, the peace keeping forces of the United States, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, France, Canada, The Netherlands, Germany, United Korea, Ireland, The Socialist Republic of Japan, Scotland, Quebec, The Native Peoples Democratic Republic of Yukon, California, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Papua-New Guinea .. have all decided that it's not really worth their while to remain in that country. A token force of some twenty Syrian soldiers will remain.

There have been reports of a sighting of Osama Bin Laden in a wheelchair in a Damascus “Wendy's” (Oooogh! .... that's my name !) --- but they seem to be unconfirmed at the time of writing.

And finally .. news that 107 year-old Sir Mick Jagger is announcing the “Rolling Stones” international “Fare Thee Well” tour today !

(It is also rumoured that he may well be announcing his engagement to 22 year-old Chinese supermodel Megan Dubrovnik – who is said to be carrying Sir Mick's 89th child ! Well done Mick – Viagra rules !)

    Now – to our review:

    1)The Environment

It has to be said that all is not well with ecology these days.

Global warming has been so awful for so long now !(Quite frankly - I can't see it improving...can you?)

The rising sea levels that devastated London, New York, Vancouver, Hamburg, Tokyo and just about everywhere in Holland just a few years ago, have to give us pause for thought. And such a shame about the London “Underground” and the New York Subway – venerable institutions, both ! But now, sadly, gone. Kaput ! You know. Terrible.

And the lives that were lost ! ...No – I don't want to talk about it.

As for the desertification of Mexico and Central America ... well ! Hasn't that been scary !

All those pooor refugees looking for work and food up here in the States ! My word – it's worse than it ever was before. Sad to say that, destitute or not – they have to realize we can't support them all ! They just have to support themselves – Good Heavens- we'll give them all the help we can!

(If things get much worse – I shall be off up to Canada myself ! That is, I would – if the Canadians weren't so damned selfish and objectionable to all those poor Texans and Southern Californians and others – who just want to make a decent life for themselves!)

And that asteroid that nearly creamed us a couple of years ago ! That was a close one, wasn't it ! They never told us about that !

But ... enough of this bad news – now let's look at Economic and Political Events ...
    (to Follow .....)

Yes ... Wendy will shortly be back ....

    In the meantime,

    Regards,

    ジョン

Ok, here are the details for my execution program. I know this would seem very, very immoral right now. In a few decades, when we have massive overpopulation it may not.
People can either choose to die at the age of 70, or continue living at an expense that will be decided by the government. That would swiftly kick overpopulation's ass.
    Or even better...
You will have your death at the age of 80, any stragglers will be killed along with the rest of the pack. Think of it as a way to stop overpopulation in its tracks. Sure it's depressing, and immoral but that'd be one the only ways to stop overpopulation. Or a massive nuclear war, biochemical war, or just massive war killing several billion people.
