Thumbs up Lille, Tournai and Kortrijk to form the first Euro-district

    Expatica : Three cities form so-called 'Euro-district'.

Kortrijk (West Flanders), Tournai (Wallonia) and Lille (in France) have agreed to work together to form a so-called 'Euro-district'. The aim of the project is to join forces to tackle common cross-border problems.
    ...
The cooperation between Kortrijk (photo of city court), Tournai and Lille establishes a Euro-metropolis of close to two million inhabitants. This is the first cross-border cooperation agreement of its sort in the European Union.

Together, the authorities of the three border cities will discuss and collaborate on cross-border issues such as cross-border work, mobility, public transport, cooperation between hospitals and emergency services, and measures to combat crime.
    ...
The 3 cities have already expanded into each others to form a metropolis more populous than the Brussels Capital Region.

We could imagine this kind of project for Liège (Wallonia), Maastricht (Netherlands) and Aachen (Germany), which are also almost adjacent, and already known under the common nickname of Alma (for Aachen, Liège, Maastricht). This metropolitan area also exceeds 2 million inhabitants.

This way, the ancient capital of the Merovingians (Tournai) and of the Carolingians (Liège, then Aachen) would form the two first European cross-border metropolis.

Apparently things are moving fast in the Alma region. Similar cooperation projects have been established for ambulances and the police (see Euronews video). The Euregio Meuse-Rhin (or Euregio Maas-Rhein), as it is called, is one now of the most developed cross-border co-operation project in Europe. It includes the Belgian provinces of Limburg and Liège, the Dutch province of Limburg, and the German province of Aachen.
