Serbian, Montenegrin and Macedonian nationals can now travel visa-free inside the the Schengen zone (EU + Norway and Iceland - UK and Ireland) since 19 December 2009. They were previously required to apply for a visa at one of the member state's embassy.
The visa waiver only applies to short-term visitors and does not allow these citizens to seek employment in the Schengen area.
Nevertheless, this is a first step towards closer ties between the EU and these countries. At present none of them are officially candidate for EU membership.
