Songs in Italian

I see that no one has posted "Caruso" by Lucio Dalla, one of my favorite songs. I prefer to listen to him sing his song, but you can't ever go wrong with Pavarotti, and the English subtitles, which are good, are right on the screen. I know some people like Lara Fabian's version, but I think she overdoes the emotion, when she doesn't need to...

Italians rule when it comes to movies and music. They just remain unknown because of the language barrier, everybody speaks English. I'm yet to see masters of originality and non-conformism like Fellini and Sergio Leone. Spielberg in comparison is a child.

Guys, I hope you don't mind, but I am asking the moderators to move the specifically film comments to a thread I've created for Italian cinema. I'd be happy to respond there with some thoughts about this.

This is a similarly named song. It's called Mi Manchi, by Fausto Leali.

I infinitely prefer his original version, but again, the only version of the song with on screen English subtitles is the version by Andrea Bocelli.

This is the Bocelli cover of the song with nice accompaniment by Kenny G.

I don't mean to sound ungracious about him; he has brought a larger audience to many of these Italian classics, for which I'm grateful.

This is the original version by Fausto Leali....a much more gut wrenching performance...nice visuals too, although as in most youtube posts for Italian songs, love only seems to exist between the young and the beautiful. Luckily for the rest of us, that isn't true in real life. :)

This is another Fausto Leali classic...A Chi..To Whom

These are the lyrics:
For whom / A chi
Will I smile / Sorriderò
If not you / Se non a te
For whom / A chi
If you, you aren't here, anymore / Se tu, tu non sei più qui
By now / Ormai
It's over / è finita
it's over, between us / è finita tra di noi
But maybe a bit of my life / Ma forse un po' della mia vita
Has remained in your eyes / è rimasta negli occhi tuoi
With whom else / A chi
Will I speak / Parlerò
If not with you / Se non a te
To whom else / A chi
Will I tell all my dreams / Racconterò tutti i sogni miei

You know / Lo sai
You've done me wrong / M'hai fatto male
Leaving me alone this way / Lasciandomi così
But it doesn't matter / Ma non importa
I'll wait for you / Io ti aspetterò
I'll wait for you / Io ti aspetterò

Repeat

A digitally remastered version of his performance of this song on RAI appeared within the last year on youtube: I love his voice.

This song was also part of the score for the sixties portion of one of my favorite Italian movies, La meglio gioventù...The Best of Youth...This is the trailer. The film is available with English subtitles, but this trailer was produced in France.

Greats Poets, in italian Music

Franco Battiato (eh should get the nobel in litterature, non open to singers, like bob Dylan)
De Andrè (same sa battiato)
Gianna Nannini (same argoment above)

Lucio Dalla
Renato Zero
Vasco Rossi
Zucchero

I quite like this modern song...I just think that pouf in his hair distracts from the music (and his beautiful face for that matter...what was he thinking?!)

L'Essenziale...The Essential Thing-Marco Mengoni

Heroes assert
“even if the game is difficult,
it’s to be played!”
Good for them then
if they mistake harm for good.
It happens also to us
we make war and then yearn for peace
and in my silence
I take away each one of your sorrows.
In order to appreciate what
I haven’t before known how to choose.

While the world falls to pieces
I put together new spaces
and desires that
belong also to you
because you’ve always been to me
what’s essential.

I will not accept
another mistake in judgment
love is capable of
hiding itself behind loving words
that I spoke aloud before when
they were empty and stupid.

While the world falls to pieces
I put together new spaces
and new desires that
belong also to you
While the world falls to pieces
I move away from the excess
and from the bad habits,
I’ll return to the origin
I return to you because you are for me
what’s essential.

Marco Mengoni participated and placed top 10 with this song in the Eurofestival last year (I think). Very nice song.

one of my favourites is Giuseppe Povia - Il bambini fanno ooh

Sorry, something went wrong with this post.

Since its World Cup times (who won WM 90 again?)

I remember that WC well. I also remember the 2006 WC, one game in particular.

I've always been of two minds about this song. I like the lyrics very much; I've just always thought there's a disconnect between them and the...I don't know...tone of the music?
Cerco l’estate tutto l’annoI look for summer all year long
e all’improvviso eccola qua.And all of a sudden, here it is.
Lei é partita per le spiaggeShe has left for the beaches,
e sono solo quassu’ in citta’ ,And I’m alone up here in the city.
sento fischiare sopra i tettiI hear whistling above the roofs...
un aeroplano che se ne va.a plane that’s leaving.
Refrain
Azzurro,il pomeriggio é troppo azzurroBlue, the afternoon is too blue
e lungo per me.And long for me.
Mi accorgoI realize
di non avere piu’ risorse,That I have no more resources
e alloraso now
io quasi quasi prendo il trenoI could almost take the train
e vengo, vengo da te,And come, come to you
ma il treno dei desideriBut the train of our desires
nei miei pensieri all’incontrario va.In my thoughts runs backwards.
Sembra quand’ero all’oratorio,It’s like when I was at the oratorio
con tanto sole, tanti anni fa.With so much sun, so many years ago.
Quelle domeniche da soloThose Sundays alone
in un cortile, a passeggiar…Walking around in a courtyard
ora mi annoio piu’ di allora,Nowadays I get more bored than I did then
Not even a priest to chat with.
I look for a bit of Africa in the garden
Between the oleander and the baobab
As I did when I was a kid
But there are people here, I can’t do that anymore
They’re watering your roses
But there’s no lion

Anyway, here's a version by the "Azzurri" of yesteryear...

I like that song its just fun to "sing" along even if you have no clue what it is your singing (in the Hosen/90 tradition) good memories but many are lost if you know.....; I bet you liked 2006 but that wont happen this time shouldnt even have happened last time but such is football;
Memorable moments from Italy 90 was the Jugo-Klatsche (all three halfs) in Milano and than an entire Italian city (>70.000 cap stadium) supporting Argentina and not their own national team; reason was obvious however;

If people choke, they choke...achievement in sports, like many other things in life, is as much a question of psychology as of skill and training and strategy. Also, some people don't seem to get it that insulting and disrespecting one's opponents can motivate those opponents to achievements that might not have been predicted. It's all Psych 101 and people skills 101. One can sabotage oneself.

However, this thread is about music, not sports. Perhaps we could keep on topic?

My favourite Italian song of all time:- Im happy Claudio also sang a song in Maltese language and looking forward to his concert in Valletta next July :)

Mina with grande grande grande released in 1973, and later a cover version by Shirley Bassey (Never Never Never) in the UK and remains one of her most known records.

I've loved almost everything Mina's ever sung, but this one really is special to me. This is the Shirley Bassey "English version". (I like her a lot too, but not as much as Mina. :))

I think it's amazing what they did with the lyrics in this case. It's not the same words at all, but it's exactly what the song means, don't you think? Bassey gets the feelings exactly right.

You are so correct. The only part left in tact in both languages is the catch phrases...love you hate you love you hate you, and many people refer both these versions with this part of the lyrics instead of the proper title of the songs :)

The lovely and very young Gigliola Cinquetti with her Eurovision winner Non Ho L'Eta: I'm not old enough.

She was before my time, but my father force fed me this song. :) I think she was the Italian version of Sandra Dee. They even have the same round faced, very innocent look.
