    Macedonian folk and traditional songs

    About Macedonian Music
Macedonian music is often described as being a product of its unique geographical position, “a crossroads between East and West”. Although slightly cliched, this description is nevertheless quite appropriate. Situated towards the Eastern edge of Europe it was also under Turkish domination for 500 years until the beginning of this century and that influence is strongly felt in Macedonia’s rich and varied musical traditions.
The closest other National style would be the music from the bordering country of Bulgaria, particularly that from the Pirin region. Music of course does not obey politically imposed boundaries, and so the music of Eastern Macedonia and Western Bulgaria is very similar. A distinctive aspect of the music is the of time signatures and internal groupings such as 7/8, 9/8, 11/8, 5/8, 12/8, 13/8, 18/8, etc. Particularly 7/8 is very commonly used.
Macedonian music is a modal drone-based music, however with the introduction of instruments such as accordion and guitar, and the influence of Western music the same melodies have been given a more harmonic backdrop. This Western harmonic approach has been an accepted practice for sometime.
The use of more traditional Macedonian instruments such as gaida (Macedonian bagpipe), kaval (end-blown flute), tapan (double-headed bass drum) and tambura (long-necked lute) is becoming rarer, however it is still possible to find among the older men in the community a small number who can play the gaida. This is not to say that there is no interest in the traditional instruments which are now mainly found in the villages, but they have gradually been replaced by modern instruments. The music is intrinsically linked with dance as there has always been a strong folk dance tradition, and much of the music accompanies these folk dances. This tradition of community participative dancing is still strong and very much alive. There is also a rich vocal tradition.
Macedonian music has been passed on by means of a strong oral tradition.

    Macedonian Girl

    Verse 1
    Macedonian girl, a many-coloured bouquet,
gathered in a garden, given as a gift.

    Refrain:
Is there in this wide world,
a more beautiful girl than a Macedonian?
There isn't, there isn't, there won't be born.
a more beautiful girl than a Macedonian!

    Verse 2
There are no stars more beautiful, than your eyes.
They light up the night sky, as though it were dawn.
    <Refrain><Refrain>

    Verse 3
When you undo your hair, like silk,
you are lovely, lovelier than a fairy.
    <Refrain><Refrain>

    Verse 4
When you sing a song, you out-sing the nightingale.
When you start to dance, your heart dances.
    <Refrain><Refrain>

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGTHzZ0wB6E

    I was born with torments

    I was born with torments
    I will die with griefs
    write my torments
    up on my gravestone

I will climb on a mountain
I will get down in the dark caves
    my eyes to extinguish
not to be able to see the sun

I will get down in the garden
    to those dewy flowers
    to that scarlet rose
    to that early white basil

    Dimna Juda
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vV3ZTTwzbDU

    Dimna Yuda

    Dimna Yuda built a city
    on the mountain, on Vlaina.

    The posts she drove
were all youths ready to be engaged,

    The wands she plaited
were all maidens ready for marriage.

    Dimna Yuda built a city
    on the mountain, on Vlaina.

Yuda (Dimna Juda/Yuda) is an evil woodland fairy found in South-Slavic folklore and mythology. She looks like a beautiful maiden who gets the souls of the youths after they marry her.

Vlaina / Vlahina - a mountain on the border of eastern Republic of Macedonia and southwestern Bulgaria. Nearby towns include Pehchevo to the southwest in the Republic of Macedonia and Simitli to the northeast in Bulgaria.

Set down, set down bright sun

Set down, set down bright sun,
    Set down, blackout
    And you clear moonlight too
    Run away, drown yourself
    Sorrow- forest, sorrow- my sister,
    Let us sorrow together
    You- for your leaves, forest
    Me- for my youth.
Your leaves, forest - my sister,
Are going to get back to you
My youth, forest - my sister,
    It's not coming back

    Tose Proeski

Todor Toše Proeski: (January 25, 1981 – October 16, 2007) was a Macedonian multi-genre singer, songwriter and actor. He was popular across the entire Balkan area and all around Eastern Europe, and locally he was considered a top act of the Macedonian music scene. Proeski was known for his strong vocal performances and trademark quote "Ve sakam site" (I Love You All), and was once dubbed "Elvis Presley of the Balkans" by BBC News. He died in a car crash in Croatia on October 16, 2007.

Jovano, Jovanke (Old Macedonian song performed by Tose Proeski)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRxbVaM2tdY

    Jovano, Jovanke

    Jovano, Jovanke,
You sit by the Vardar, bleaching your white linen,
Bleaching your white linen, my dear,
    Looking at the hills.
    Jovano, Jovanke,
    I'm waiting for you,
    To come to my home,
And you don't come, my dear,
    My heart, Jovano.
    Jovano, Jovanke,
    Your mother, doesn't let you,
    (to)come with me, my dear,
    My heart, Jovano.
