A few weeks ago, France 2, the leading public TV channel in France, held a special programme called Le village préféré des Français (The favourite village of French people). The audience was asked to elect their favourite village in each of France's 22 regions. The villages were then ranked against each others, in a nationwide top 22 most beautiful villages. 66,000 people voted. Here is the final ranking:

  1. Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, Midi-Pyrénées
  2. Saint-Guilhelm-le-Désert, Languedoc-Roussillon
  3. Barfleur, Basse Normandie
  4. Salers, Auvergne
  5. Yvoire, Rhône-Alpes
  6. Riquewhir, Alsace
  7. Beynac-et-Cazenac, Aquitaine
  8. Les Baux-de-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'azur
  9. Collonges-la-Rouge, Limousin
  10. Maroilles, Nord-Pas-de-Calais
  11. Angles-sur-Anglin, Poitou-Charentes
  12. Piana, Corse
  13. Saint-Suliac, Bretagne
  14. Montsoreau, Pays de la Loire
  15. Baume-les-Messieurs, Franche-Comté
  16. Rodemack, Lorraine
  17. Gerberoy, Picardie
  18. Le Bec-Hellouin, Haute Normandie
  19. Essoyes, Champagne-Ardenne
  20. Apremont-sur-Allier, Centre
  21. Vézelay, Bourgogne
  22. La Roche-Guyon, Île-de-France

Thanks for listing, Maciamo, I will keep that in mind when I next travel to France. I had the opportunity to see St Cirq from the Lot, as I went down on a kayak, the view is stunning, no wonder it's a favourite in France. I visited Beynac, it's an amazing place. The castle, where Luc Besson's "Joan of Arc " was shot, was well worth the trip.
