Albanian renowned tenor Gaqo Çako passed away at the age of 83. The news of his death was announced by the National Theater of Opera and Ballet through a posting on social networks, giving a farewell to the historic symbol of Albanian opera and music, “Honor of the Nation” – Gaqo Çako. With deep sorrow, we announce the death of the virtuoso tenor, the historic symbol of the Albanian opera music, “Honor of the Nation” – Gaqo Çako.
Gaqo Çako was born on January 24, 1935. The legendary tenor, Gaqo Çako, People’s Artist, is listed among the big names of the Albanian music pantheon as Ramiz Kovaçi, Mentor Xhemali, etc. From 1957 to1961 he studied at Moscow’s “Tchaikovsky” conservatory under the direction of lecturer Anna Soloviova. After returning to Albania in 1961 he was appointed permanent tenor of the Tirana Opera and Ballet Theater, where he performed many of the first roles of the operatic repertoire, becoming the leading tenor for three decades. His pristine sound set the standards of the Albanian operatic tenors.His rich experience and career in the operas “Traviata”, “Boehme”, “Rigoleto”, “Norma”, etc., as well as the Albanian opera “Mrika” of Prenk Jakova, “The Flower of Remembrance” by Kristo Konos, “Spring “of Tish Daia, “Heroine”of Vangjo Novella, “Skenderbeg” of Prenk Jakova, “Skanderbeg” of Abdulla Grimci, “The Commissar” of Nikola Zoraqi, “Awakening” of Tonin Harapi, ” Earth ” of Pjeter Gaci etc. , make him a great master with a great career. He is well known even in the Italian stages where he has finished Santa Cecilia’s conservatory. Though he had the greatest value and contribution in operatic performances, he was popular in the performance of lyric songs, especially those of the Song Festival an activity organized annually by RTSH.
