The ongoing civil war in Syria which was started on March,2011 can be candidate for one of the most brutal wars in world history. Started as peaceful demonstrations but in following days became a horrible war between Syrian Army and the uprising groups. The opposition was composed of civilians and also escaped officers from the army who did not want to involve in these violence against civilians.

Additionally, Hezbollah also sent troops to fight together with Syrian Army against oppositon. Apart from the Hezbollah, Syrian Ba'ath Government and Army also got support from Iran, Russia and China. As known the last two are the members of the UN security council and have vote to effect the decisions. On the other hand, the opposition is supported by Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

The picture in Syria now seems like a rivalry between Alawite Shabiha militias, Syrian Army and Sunni opposition groups.

As a result of this rivalry unfortunately many innocent people lose their lives and it seems if UN or NATO does not intervene many more will die until the end of this war. Russia and China continue to prevent an international intervention whereas Turkey aims to stop this civil war immediately with an international force.

According to most international agencies the war is practically over, syrian government has almost recovered their country from international terrorist groups. There are a few micro-groups still active from Al-Qaeda but nothing important.
 
Where ever you have religion based groups such as the Sunni and the Shi'a so violently opposed to other, and so ready to impose their will by violent means, you will have "wars" such as this. Mix in politics, which in most Muslim countries are religion based, and you have the necessary volatile mixture for ongoing, large scale violence. I don't know why it should be so, but the most volatile countries seem mostly to be Muslim.

that is total BS. I have friends in America who are from Lebanon but they have family in Syria too with whom they talk to all the time. On the Arabic news stations they show countless civilians and families living in open tents in Syria after being displaced from heir homes by one terrorist group or another and they're still constantly fighting.

Members of one terrorist group or another are still coming in from countries like Saudi Arabia and others to fight with their comrades in Syria.

The Syrian government has not recovered hardly anything.
I know people who tell me that stuff from first hand knowledge about what it's like in Syria right now.

It's pretty bad. The fighting is still taking place and it's not just simply small or insignificant sporadic incidents.

it's typically the Sunni who first attack the Shi'ite....................just saying.
