Ground shaking announcement from Lockheed Martin Corporation. Supposedly they've figured out how to produce electricity from nuclear fusion. They claim that they will have working reactor in 10 years, the size of a truck, which is very small for reactors.
Nuclear fusion is the holy grail of energy source. Same fusion of hydrogen atoms that happens in core of our Sun. It will give us almost inexhaustible clean energy.
Well, if it only works this time. We've been promised Fusion Reactors for last 70 years, since explosion of first Hydrogen Bomb. Making the bomb was easy, reactor extremely difficult.

This would indeed be a true game changer for how the world produces energy - if this is true... The MIT Technology Review provides more mitigated feedback.

This technology escaped my attention. I was under impression that to isolate a gene from plant, animal or fungus and use it in research or transplant it to other plants or animals to achieve required characteristic, one needs to spend months of splicing and slicing a chromosome to get the pure gene. This is no longer true. There a machines, gene synthesizers, that can build a gene one letter at the time. It requires only sending a gene "blueprint" to this company and about 5,000 dollars for average gene and you will receive the gene you are after in few days.

The picture is of a new solar system 450 light years away. The new sun is in center and new planet is glowing in pink. Planet is glowing because hydrogen and other materials got squeezed and became very very hot, 10,000 Celsius. System is very young, only 2 million years old.

This is first direct evidence that the theory of solar system and planet formation from dust/hydrogen cloud is right! In this picture we can see a star, a planet, and still remaining hot gas swirling above them, yet to coalesce into farther planets, moons, comets, etc.

Few decades ago only few people believed that it will be possible to ever see planets in other solar systems. Here we go now!

Few years ago Watson computer from IBM has beaten best humans in Jeopardy game. Today another computer, this time from Google, Alphago beats the best human player of Chinese game Go. Supposedly the most difficult game ever. Score 4 to 1 for Alphago. Google says it is not much about a supercomputer, but more about very clever software. Smart software which can learn from every played game.

I'm going to love this one. These are augmented reality glasses by Microsoft, Hololens. Have a look...



I think they are still in Beta testing and cost a little fortune of 10,000 USD. But hey, most of us should have it or similar devices in few years. Less cumbersome and less geeky too. We no longer will need computer screen. Put your augmented reality glasses on and you can see as many screens, applications open or documents displayed around you as you need. You no longer need a laptop or pc because the glasses is your computer and your phone, with voice communication.
You can put your glasses on and go fix your car, as you can see your car and tutorial at the same time. Put glasses on and watch a game, and you will feel like sitting at the stadium. Sit on exercise bike with your glasses and it will seem like riding through a countryside, or riding streets of historic cities. Countless possibilities. It will be a paradigm shift, like personal computer and smart phones were.
