Looking into the Home/Hume DNA Project I managed to identify the ancestral lineage of the great Scottish philosopher, historian and economist David Hume (1711-1776). His genealogy shows that he is descended from Thomas Home of Home (1355-1427), and ultimately from William Dominus de Home, Laird of Home (1190-1266). This places him unambiguously in the R1a group, whose members are mostly Scottish and appear to share the same haplotype.

Their deep clade is R1a-CTS4179 (Z284 > L448 > CTS4179), the most common Scottish variety of R1a, which came from Norway with the Vikings. It is the same R1a branch as Somerled of Argyll, the progenitor of Clan Somhairle, Clan MacDougall, and Clan Donald.

David Hume was one of the fathers of the Scottish Enlightenment and one of the leading Empiricist philosophers, who argued that knowledge comes only or primarily from sensory experience (as opposed to Descartes's rationalism, which states that knowledge and reality can only be inferred from the mind).
