It's such a great song, but he has a lot of great songs.

He's a really good guy, Bill Joel, and not just because of all the help he's tried to give to Long Island fishermen. He just lives his life, eats and drinks in the same old places he always did as a kid, waits in line at the store, down to earth, friendly, the guy next door who made it big but never forgot where he came from. He just got a bigger house. :)

He's a really amazing artist, who was able to have so many diverse styles; and managed to make each sound fantastic.

You're right: from that delicious harmonizing doo-wop on "The Longest Time", to country, to "The Stranger", another one of my favorites.

That's what I love about these New York/New Jersey guys-Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen-not only good music, but great lyrics that give you something to think about, that you memorize and sing along with them.

The Stranger
Well, we all have a face
That we hide away forever
And we take them out
And show ourselves when everyone has gone
Some are satin, some are steel
Some are silk and some are leather
They're the faces of a stranger
But we'd love to try them on

Well, we all fall in love
But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
Why were you so surprised
That you never saw the stranger
Did you ever let your lover
See the stranger in yourself

Don't be afraid to try again
Everyone goes south every now and then
You've done it
Why can't someone else
You should know by now
You've been there yourself

Once I used to believe
I was such a great romancer
Then I came home to a woman
That I could not recognize
When I pressed her for a reason
She refused to even answer
It was then I felt the stranger
Kick me right between the eyes

Well, we all fall in love
But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
Why were you so surprised
That you never saw the stranger
Did you ever let your lover
See the stranger in yourself

Don't be afraid to try again
Everyone goes south every now and then
You've done it
Why can't someone else
You should know by now
You've been there yourself

You may never understand
How the stranger is inspired
But he isn't always evil
And he is not always wrong
Though you drown in good intentions
You will never quench the fire
You'll give in to your desire
When the stranger comes along

Poor Billy, he wasn't lucky in love...

It doesn't get any better than Billy, his piano, and Tony Bennet singing "A New York State of Mind" at Shea Stadium.

Indeed, I love this area for it's musical legends, who were so soulful and captured that quintessential feeling of NY/NJ.

What an amazing combo!

Happier Times: Joe Bonamassa at the Royal Albert Hall

He opened for BB King when he was 12 or 13, and it's only gone up from there...you have to be born with genius like this, and then you have to eat, drink, and sleep it.
