When meeting a long distant cousin, what are do's and Don't' s when replying to oral histories. Sorry if this makes me look not so bright but I'm a little nervous on what to say without offending her unintentionally

Be warm, friendly and courteous and she will forgive your faux pas, if you do. Remember she will be in same situation.
Don't be stiff and distant. It is never good for building a friendship. A nice smile can bridge divides.
Be wary of people who tend to glorify the past, underestimate the present, and demonize the future.
