I will throw up, and intellectually secede from the USA. I recognize I can't legally do it although I do based on Italian law can qualify for Italian citizenship by blood (jure sangiunis). If Giorgia Meloni wins I may just do it.

    Salento:

That is one great photo. I doubt MSNBC will run it, but if I were on Bernie Sanders campaign staff, I would circulate that photo. 1) It ties Bloomberg to both Trump and Rudy, not good if your running for the Democrat nomination. 2) There is our old friend Bill Clinton. So if Hillary gets the urge to jump back in, you politically link her to well, Rudy, Trump and Bloomberg.

Well when I visited Sicily last summer, I did get my Paternal Great Grandfathers birth record and wedding certified for the dual citizenship. I just don't know how long it is valid. I still have documents here to get "apostille" I think is the legal term. The thought of having dual citizenship has entered my mine.

In 2004, Bloomberg was one of the largest financial backers of G.W. Bush. Here we are 16 years later and he is running for the Democrat Nomination. Kind of like when I was growing up and going to the barber shop, where I grew up in Southern USA mostly Americano-Siciliano with some Americano-Calabrese/Abruzzo, etc. and those old guys talked about a bunch of global elites meeting somewhere in Europe and putting things on this big chess board. Ahhh, we need to get rid of this guy in this country. We need to start something to drive up Oil prices a while, where can we start a little war. Ahhh, we need to cause a crisis here and force some migrants to have to leave as we need more cheap labor in this country to drive wages down for the middle class, etc, etc, etc. It sort sounded like a conspiracy to me as a kid but the older I get, not so sure any longer. Michael Corleone's quote back in what was in the movie, the 1950's, (1974 Il Padrino Due) seems like those old American-Italians from my childhood days were not too far off.

Torzio: He was, he never liked the Bushes which is why he was a big donor for Bill Clinton during the 90's, I think he backed Hillary's Senate campaign in NY. However, I do believe he backed Ronald Reagan back in the 80's so it seems Trump was sort of non tied to any party. I personally was never a fan of the Bushes either, too Bramin Country Club elitist for me.

Razib Khan seems pretty pessimistic about the fate of the Republic lately.

Is Trump really Sulla and Bernie Marius?

I doubt it. You can't draw comparisons like this, imo; there are too many differences.

At any rate I certainly hope this isn't the end of the Republic and the beginning of rule by the masses ushering in an autocrat.

Some of the attributed busts do look a bit like Bernie. :)

I don't think we should underestimate the appeal of being told you can have everything for free, even if it comes from a Fidel Castro and Chavez praising Marxist who honeymooned in Russia. :)

Personally, I don't think Bernie has a chance at all. People said Obama was a socialist, but in reality he had the backing of Wall street. At most he was a Keynesian, and a neo-liberal globalist. Bernie will never have the backing of big corporate donors, that the democratic establishment has. They will either side with Trump, or sit out the election. Therefore, I believe Trump, who has 90% of GOP approval, will crush Bernie in the general election.

While I think Trump will win re-election, especially against Bernie, I believe we'll be surprised by the amount of support Bernie gets, especially in places likes California and Massachusetts. Too many of our youth are being taught that capitalism is a dirty word.

A man who made 60 billion dollars from nothing can still be incredibly stupid outside his own sphere, as well as just generally a jerk as a human being. Those comments of his about farmers made me want to give him a schiaffo right across the face. That's on top of how I know he treated the police who had to attend him. How dare he talk about throwing people up against the wall. He wouldn't be able to throw a twelve year old against the wall.

He's the type of person who would be totally valueless in terms of survival if we had to form groups after an apocalypse of some sort, like Eugene in The Walking Dead, or worse.

I can't abide him as a person, never could.

There would be a good thread to start . . . what is the nature of genius and why does it seem to reside in a single field? Why are geniuses quite often the most foolish people outside their own field?

It's a good question. Maybe because real excellence means everything else in your life, including learning other things or how to value and get along with people has to be sacrificed? Maybe there's no time or energy for anything else?

I don't think it's true of all geniuses, though, do you? I don't think Einstein was foolish; playful, maybe, but that's different.

I have to admit it's difficult for me to separate someone's "talent" whatever the sphere, from who the person is as a human being. If the person has real feet of clay morally it's difficult for me even to appreciate the work produced. That's part of the reason why I couldn't vote for Trump last time around.

This is a tangent, but it just occurred to me. Really high, genius like IQ or winning a Nobel Prize in physics doesn't mean you'd be any good at running a country. Different skill sets are involved. I think I read somewhere that perhaps Jimmy Carter was our highest IQ president, which, given that he graduated with an engineering degree from the U.S. Naval Academy may be true. I thought he was totally ineffectual as a president, however. I know that Richard Nixon was very smart, because in the year he took the New York State Bar Exam, a very difficult exam indeed, he came in number one. He was a totally unlikeable man, however, with terrible people skills, which had a part in his undoing.

Even running a big successful business doesn't necessarily transfer, because you can't just issue orders. Congress has to be courted. That's been part of Trump's problem all along, in addition to the fact that in my opinion he has all the emotional control of a child in a constant tantrum.

The latter problem is part of what plagues Bloomberg in my opinion, with the added problem that he's completely unlikeable, and absolutely does NOT have the "common touch" that Trump has. Trump sounds like and has the same opinions as the plumbers and masons and electricians on his job sites. Bloomberg sounds like the grey "suit" that all the regular guys hate.

Well as Plato in essence said in the Republic, direct democracy leads to Tyranny, which is why Thank God for now we still have a Constitutional Republic, with democratic elections. Unfortunately there are some who are making arguments for more and more Direct Democracy. States giving away there states electoral votes based on the vote of the entire country. So in my state, I vote for a certain way, as does most of my fellow citizens in the state I reside, and because California votes overwhelmingly 1 way these days, my states electoral votes goes to who California voters want??? This country starts going down that road, and Plato's warnings will unfortunately come to fruition. I just hope if it does, I am long gone Dead.

I hear you there, I’m not confident that any of the Democrats have what it takes to defeat Trump.
You’ll be better off encouraging a celebrity to run for President as a Democrat. Trump is a Celebrity and knows how to entertain folks at his rally.

Oh you sly devil! I love a good pun.

If I still went to confession, I would confess the pleasure I took in that. :)

Maybe the Democrats will get to him as they got to Elizabeth Warren: stay in the race please! We can't let the nomination go to Sanders. Or maybe it's unnecessary. What he lacks in height he makes up for in arrogance per inch. He could still be thinking that if throws another couple of hundred million at the race it might be a brokered convention and then the "establishment" would hand it to him. He still doesn't get that Democrats don't consider him a Democrat and don't like him and want him to go away. Of course, the Republicans hate him too. He's a party of one. :)

Bloomberg's campaign is a good example of the sunk cost fallacy.

Not to be conspiratorial, but I wonder if his campaign spending is just an elaborate means to launder bribe-money to certain people, to not go after him for sexual harassment scandals. Because I seriously don't know how he thought he could win, without even participating in all of the primaries and caucuses; on top of the absurd things he said.

Bloomberg is out, and he endorses Biden.
