Memorial Day in the United States of America

I hear you. I think she's a completely amoral person, and have thought so for years, but especially since all the scandals surrounding her husband and all those women. Women have their own reasons for staying with a man who is a cheater, even a serial cheater, and no one should judge, but to stay with a man who forces himself on other women, does pervy things in the Oval Office, and even worse, to attack those women as "trailer trash", as if that makes it all right is beyond the pale. If you can do that you can do anything.

That said, Donald Trump is not an unknown quantity to me. I thought then and think now that he doesn't have the temperament to be president, and in addition he knows nothing about how to get things done in Washington and is incapable because of his ego of taking advice, which is why everything has been harder than it need have been.

Bottom line, I couldn't face voting for either of them, and so for the first time in my adult life I didn't vote for president, although I voted down line.

Honestly, that was the reason why I stuck with Bernie till the end instead of Trump. At least with Bernie, an Independent would be in the office. Plus all the violent crimes that has spiked up in the Trump era. But what happened in in the past. We must find a diplomatic Candidate that is going to help create jobs. :)

There I disagree, Twilight. Bernie is an out and out socialist. He would have been a disaster for the economy. In my opinion, all socialists do is try to redistribute wealth, carve up ever smaller pies. They're not about creating a bigger pie.

Don't get me wrong: I do believe in a social safety net, but not socialism of his brand.

As if almost 35 years of neoliberalism, greed is good, has made the US prosperous! Ok I most correct a few extra prosperous.....not the average American.
The middle class is eroded.

In fact social democracy, like the New Deal in the US, has always tried to soften capitalism. It aimed to enlarge the middle class. At least that was in the post war period the effect of it (in NW Europe).

But even smart Americans like you can’t pass the moderate leftist = commie idea.... Like a red flag on a bull ;)

I don't think I ever called Bernie a "communist" for what it's worth. If I did it was for exaggeration and humorous intent.

By American standards he's not a "moderate" leftist. It doesn't much matter to me how Europeans see him. Luckily, they're not voting here. :) We already have enough fuzzy thinking leftists of our own.

As for "prosperity" in America, when 50% of your population doesn't pay income tax, and you have whole cities populated by an underclass which doesn't work and subsists on public assistance, we'll see what happens to your stats.

That will do it for me. I get into enough heated discussions on here about ancient dna, I don't need to add a whole other category!

IMO, the growth of the middle class was created from the growth of labor unions. These unions provided benefits that allowed their income to be used to prosper and purchase more in the economy, creating more middle-income jobs in subsidiary industries.

Now, we see middle income families purchasing goods and services from imported sources. The primary reason is that it is “cheaper”. In doing so, the middle-class jobs have slowly begun to disappear and many “mom and pop” businesses have been closed. The smaller middle class it has produced is taxed at a higher and higher proportion to maintain the government benefits for those who are not working (Angela’s point).

This new middle class seems to be made up primarily of government union paid jobs, such as Educators, Services (Fire, Police, Government Service Workers) are beginning to have an income reality, or at the very least income potential, that surpasses that of the old labor unions. This new class wants higher wages but refuse to pay the higher wages of those workers in this country that make higher wages, and in effect are cutting off their noses to spite their faces because there is no longer that large group who pay the majority of taxes.

The point is, and that's also in Europe (in lesser extent) the case, that since Reagan and Thatcher there was no or less eye for the common good!
Remember Thatcher " There is no such thing as society".
Your are sold responsible for your own future/thing and ok when you don't make it, it's your own stupid thing....

So because the Americans, in stead of the days of the New Deal of the Great society, don't want to invest in the common good, but in stead react like again Thatcher, "I want my money back", the good old "res publica" (from the good old Romans remember!!!) has gone into the toilet.

The underclass is in this respect no longer a matter of concern, because if they worked harder, took their chances, they had made it, isn't it???

globalization destroyed the middle class ......the poor became slightly better initially, the rich became super-rich , the middle took the huge tumble

Globalization is a kind of container thing....
I guess it also brought advantages, possibilities of a broader perspective.
But can in economic/ societal sense (mis)used for a race to the bottom.
I prefer the middle ground, although that's more easy for small states like the Netherlands than for big ones like the US.

Let's wait and see. Of ourse this is a big step, better than threatning eachother with a complete nuclear disaster....
But no matter how important, it are nothng more nothing less than some intentions, there is still a long, long way to go.
The North Koreans can start now with hide and seek.
This means patience and a very long breath (not core qualities of mr. Trump).
