I don't understand why this is considered such news. I read about it in university in a wonderful and recently re-released book called "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich", although that focused on the use of meth/cocaine/opiates by Hitler and Goering and other party leaders, and by SS troops doing mass executions and running the extermination camps. Indeed, "Judgement at Nuremberg", which is about the trials of the leaders, they
explain how Goering had to be weaned off drugs before he could stand trial.
What was new to me was that the regular Wehrmacht was dosed with meth to fuel the original Blitzkrieg. As was pointed out, even that won't help when the major enemy is the cold and snow of Russia and poor planning.
