This clade was found in the Cucuteni-Trypillian culture (as I had predicted), which explains the hotspot around Moldova. G2a-L497 (or actually its Z1816 subclade) was probably assimilated by the R1b-U152 Proto-Italo-Celts before moving to the Alps. Not only is there a strong geographic correlation with the La Tène culture, L497 also matches the distribution of Italic tribes in Italy. Its high frequency in northwestern Iberia could be due to the accumulated migrations of the Hallstatt Celts and especially the Suebi tribe from Baden-Württenberg.

Data from Spain, France and Central Europe is still patchy, so it will need to be refined.

your map does not match the map on this paper in reference to this marker

http://www.blutspendezurich.ch/Medi...h resolution mapping of Y haplogroup G(2).pdf

The paper also states that 79.8% of this marker dominates all G ydna in Austria

Thanks for the map Mr. Hay! Something about G2a-L497 now...
G2a2b2a1a1b-L497 is about 10.000 years old. This is the largest European subgroup, to which half of the European G, belongs. It seems that G-L497, which is one of the most "European" of haplogroups, spread out from Western Anatolia (where it's found in small numbers) to the Danube Basin with the First Farmers, around 8400-7800 ybp. Because it's an old and large group, we can not connect all it's branches to the same migrations during the eneolithic/bronze age/iron age. According to you, best candidate of L497 branches for 'early' Indo-Europeanisation (I agree) is Z1816 and it's branches (Z726, L43...).

  • [*=left]Z1816, which is found throughout Western and Central Europe, and especially in Germanic countries. Its coalescence age was estimated around 4,500 years by Yfull, but its L42 subclade was found in a Trypillian outlier individual who lived between 4,900 and 5,600 years ago. This branch might have been assimilated by Proto-Indo-Europeans through contact with the Late Trypillian people who moved to the Pontic Steppe and merged with Yamna tribes. It would later have spread around Germanic and Celtic countries alongside haplogroup R1b.
Also we have few ancient samples connected to the G2a-L497.
An G-L497 from Keltendorf Mitterkirchen, from the Hallstatt Culture from 700 BCE.

There is also high geographic coincidence between G2a-L497 and R1b-U152.

Probably you meant Z1816, not L13.

Thanks for this map.

Yes, sorry. That's what happens when you post at the end of a busy day. I have been working on the L497 and U1 maps at the same time and both were assimilated early by PIE in eastern Europe and spread to the rest of Europe. With U1 the IE subclade is L13. With L497 it is Z1816 (or L42).
