LeBrok directed my attention to this film. It is really worth watching: brilliantly directed, filmed and acted. The Polish actresses, particularly the two "leads", are just spectacular. I've never seen a film so accurately depict the life within a convent, which is a testament both to them and to the director. Of course, the film depicts far more than that; it's a profound exploration of both faith and ethics.

The forward says it is based on real experiences. I would love to know if the ending is true to the actual story. I have my doubts, but perhaps I've just grown too cynical.

This is the trailer:

One of many wonderful reviews:

I watched this again last night. It's even more impressive the second time around.

If you haven't seen it, I really recommend that you give it a try.

For all the appalling subject matter, it lifts the human spirit. We are capable of wondrous things as well as horrors.

I would recommend the film too. One theme of it is dealing and growing with your beliefs when they are being tested. Acting is brilliant and I like the snowy scenery. Yet, the characters could have more depth to them.

Holy cow, I saw your recommendations and just watched it on Viaplay here in Sweden with my girlfriend. Technically it's a beautifully made film, but the story and script is just amazing. Acting is amazing as well, but movies like this never get an Oscar of course, even if it deserves it. In times like this we all know what Russians are capable of, makes me disgusted and bitter.

I'm so glad you liked it. There are quite a few films from Poland that I've really enjoyed. You might want to give this a try: Ida

I also very much enjoyed the Czech film Zelary:

If you've never watched Dr. Zhivago, btw, I highly, highly recommend it. It brings the Russian Revolution to life. Your girlfriend will also thank you, as it's an unsurpassed love story.

Just recently re-watched Downfall. I also highly recommend that if you haven't seen it. Best portrayal of Hitler I've ever seen. It's absolutely riveting.

As is Conspiracy about the Wannsee Conference. The trailer in English seems to have disappeared, but the English language film is available for rent on you tube, and I'm sure other film sites.

I could go on and on. As you can see I'm rather obsessed by WWII.
