Hello everyone!

I already tried to post this yesterday but it seems as if something has gone wrong.

I just received my results from MyHeritage. Sadly Ancestry is not yet available in Germany. According to MyHeritage I am...

92,2 % North and West Europe
6,2 % Iberia
1,6 % Balkan

I then uploaded my raw data to Gedmatch and got the following results:

Eurogenes K13:

1 North_Atlantic 42.78
2 Baltic 22.12
3 West_Med 17.79
4 East_Med 7.59
5 West_Asian 7.45
6 Northeast_African 0.74
7 Siberian 0.73
8 Oceanian 0.62
9 Sub-Saharan 0.17

I did several other Gedmatch tests but I don't know which one would be best for me. As I'm from Germany and also having massive French ancestry it doesn't surprise me that I'm overall West-European. I expected that although I'd love to know if I'm more French or more German. Thing is I do know nothing about my father's heritage as he was adopted. He just looked very Mediterranean and most people thought he was a Turk. The Iberian part was a surprise but could possibly come from my father's side (he's past away when I was very young)?

I also do have Italian ancestry which doesn't show up in the results on MyHeritage at all although I got some Sardinian or North Italian % on Gedmatch. My ancestor that came from Sicily is said to have North African, Egyptian background - does the East Med mean Egypt/Libya perhaps? I would really love to explore the tiny parts in my DNA as I know I'm mostly Central European, so anything else is really interesting for me. I'm a quote lost at these results and the actual meaning at the moment. I would highly appreciate any assistance and info as I trust you're the experts here! (y)

I find this interesting. Our K13's are very similar, but our MyHeritage scores are VERY different.

1 North_Atlantic 39.89
2 Baltic 27.13
3 West_Med 15.38
4 East_Med 7.59
5 West_Asian 5.20
6 Red_Sea 2.44

I wonder why you have such low Balkan compared to me when we have very similar K13's.

I think those look about right based on your descriptions.

This is really interesting, thanks for sharing your results! I had zero British while on Gedmatch there's often Orcadian, South-West English or even Irish in my oracles. Wonder why our MyHeritage results are so different indeed...

So,could West Med and East Med in this case mean some North African heritage?

It could. North African or Egyptian may be showing up under the SW Asia category.

Thank you for your reply! I definitely get quite high West Asian percentage with any Gedmatch admixtures. Mostly around 7-9 % but sometimes even more which surprised me as I thought this means Iran area.

I found this Ethiohelix + French admixture. Would this be helpful for me as I do have French ancestry? My results there were 50 % French and 50 % Egyptian. But I've read this test wasn't reliable or only useful for people with mainly African heritage? I'm still confused, sorry!

Can you post your HarappaWorld Gedmatch run please?

GedMatch reliability shouldn't be taken for granted.

How exactly do they match for the ancestral groups?
Do the have adequate samples(for matching ethnic groups
in the oracles)?
How exactly do they match ethnic groups?
etc are valid questions.
Comercial companies reliability, on the other hand,i think is almost certain. As long as you understand what the results mean that is.
They simply match your DNA to reference populations.
So when they , in your case, say north/western Europe it means that that part of your sequences are found in Northwestern Europe irrespective of their origins. In other words i suspect companies simply report the geographic frequency of SNP sequences of your DNA, and many times by very loose arbitrary categorisations(like east Asian, south Asian , west Asian etc).
