  • Frau believes a tidal wave caused by a comet may washed the ancient civilisation away in 1,175 BC, taking the island back to a dark age

Writer and Atlantis expert Sergio Frau says the southern end of the Mediterranean isle resembles an underwater Pompeii, which may have been the inspiration for Plato’s fictional Island of Atlantis.

He and another expert believe a tidal wave that was caused by a comet washed the ancient civilisation away in the second millennium BC, taking the island back to a dark age.

The writer said that the southern tip of Sardinia resembles ‘a marine Pompeii submerged by mud’ where metal tools, ceramics, pots and oil lamps were found in the mid-20th Century, in a state suggesting people hastily abandoned the site.
He wanted to uncover why Sardinia was plunged into a ‘dark age’ in 1,175 BC.
Nuraghi, which are megalithic fortresses with a central tower dating from between the 16th and 12th century BC suggest the civilisation was quite advanced before disaster struck.

Ancient documents suggest a huge tidal wave swept over the island, forcing people to flee and now modern scholars have suggested it was caused by a comet.

Whole Bronze Age Europe was pulled into Dark Ages at same time, not just Sardinia. Did he hear about Bronze Age collapse?!
Maybe there was a comet, tidal waves and tsunami, but it wasn't the cause of these dark ages this time.

I don't understand where Frau got this idea that the Nuragic civilization collapsed in the 12th century bc.

Some of the most impressive Nuragic structures were built during this century, see for instance:

Take, for instance, the well temple of Santa Cristina, dated to the 12-11th century bc, it's an absolute master piece of Nuragic architecture:

Also, the famous Nuragic bronze statuettes or "Bronzetti" started being produced from the 12th century bc onwards, and the stone statues date to an even later period (11-9th century bc). So I don't get how he can say that the Nuragic civilization collapsed or regressed, technology and architectural/artistic output continued and was even more complex during these later phases, it's only that the typical Nuragic fortresses and towers stopped being built and were replaced with large sanctuaries where different communities gathered to celebrate festivities, trade and take political decisions.
Most Nuragic sanctuaries were also built from the 13-12th century bc onward, see for instance that of Serri, one of the biggest ones spanning over 20 hectares with several beautiful buildings and other interesting structures:

Plato's dating for the sinking of Atlantis is around 9,600 BC, which is almost the exact time period when a massive meteor/comet struck the ice caps of Greenland, likely resulting in a cataclysmic rise of sea levels of 400m virtually overnight.

To me this is almost proof of Atlantis, and for Plato (through Solon, through the Egyptian Priesthood) to have gotten this date of 9,600 BC correct would be an extraordinary coincidence, far less-likely than him having accurate information of an actual event and dating for it.

This also corroborates many culture's mythologies of survivors of a cataclysm from an advanced civilisation came to their lands (by sea, or sometimes from the skies) and brought with them great technologies, language, agriculture, and the ability to build massive-megalithic structures.
