Society New map of average male body height in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa

Interesting:

In 67 ad, the minimum requirement for a Legionnaire of the Legio Italica was 1.77 m. - 5.8 (considerable height for the time) and born in the Italic Peninsula

in Italian
https://www.capitolivm.it/esercito-romano/storia-delle-legioni-romane-2/
By contrast, the height requirement for the British Army in World War I was 5'3", but so many died that they lowered it to 5'. They were called the bantams.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bantam_(military)

I know the lower classes had terrible diets throughout the Victorian Era, but that's really pretty short.

I remember people on the old dna-forums and here as well trying to convince me that the Roman legionnaires ate only puls and therefore must have been very puny. I couldn't convince them that that seemed to me impossible given how many battles they won and how much land they conquered. Strategy and discipline can take you only so far.

Then, in the last couple of years studies have come out showing that the legions had cattle, pigs, sheep, set up fish ponds, and grew some of their own food. It was mainly the wheat and wine which were shipped in, along with garum, which they loved. Of course, when on the march they carried only flour to make bread, salt pork, and wine.

Not to say that the Gauls and Germani weren't somewhat larger. It just goes to show that diet did indeed make a difference over the millennia. Still, the British aren't particularly tall even now. I've been re-watching Game of Thrones, and a lot of the male actors are pretty short, starting with Kit Harington, who looks to be about 5'5"-5'7". Not that I can imagine any woman complaining. :) A lot of others as well, such as the actors playing Ramsay Bolton, Theon Greyjoy, Littlefinger, Joffrey, even Richard Madden.
Very Interesting, Thanks Angela. :)

Lol the map is so wrong, especially regarding the UK, I think they just done London... British I mean original British people are much taller then those from Poland, Serbia, and Kosovo. I know because I live in the UK, I’m from Kosovo, sorry but Brits are much taller then us.

I agree with you, does all the portugueses are "dwarves" under 165 does they are like pygmys? ,easterners males ,in the most western slavic populations are like me in general meaning middle tall ,i'am the perfect average celt stereotype from the mouth of yves coppens, meaning middle tall 1.76m light chesnut with blue eyes, and this amateur pretend to do better than professional anthropologists and paleoanthropologists?
ok for females ,but for males is completly untrue there are "dwarves" and "giants" in any ethnies, but there are ethnies like in africa who are very specifically tall like the masaiis for example, height is not very define completly by advance "dwarves" parents could have a double-metre as kid(good for investing in basketball after lol) as the contrary could been too, maybe more rare but it could,if the genes have jumped one or two generations and they wants there "payback" (i'am killing) to be off so longer, they will.
poland seriously? polls are probably taller than the brits in any way, does this guy have never watch an euro league championship basket/volley/handball match (set by 80% of white ethnic europeans) of his life or what? i never heard than UK is shining in this category,ok for soccer or the "paleo" rugby but for basket/volley/handball why UK winning the championship in these categories sound completly fake at the side of croatia/lithuania/poland/montenegro/finland/estonia ,don't tell me than i'am not right?

I’m talking about proper white British men, they are taller then polish people here in the uk. Polish people aren’t that tall as people make them out to be.

Heights by continents

A simple list by country may be helpful when it comes to placing yourself in your own neighbourhood. Here again a list summarized by subcontinent. It becomes clear that there are differences within the same continent. The weight of North Africans and British is a bit out of line. In terms of body size, Southern Europeans, North Americans and Western Asians have noticeable deviations to the rest of the continent.

Influences on body size

The main reasons for regional differences in body size are heredity and nutritional standards. A protein-rich food is important, and this is noticeable over generations. Although protein is considered an essential component here, a weakening of the body due to diseases and allergies also has an inhibiting effect on growth. Diseases occur more frequently as a result of weaknesses in the immune system and therefore consume the energy that the body could put into its growth. Good health is primarily due to a good diet, but in the second instance also to a good health system with adequate medical care. As a result, the average body size is remarkably low, especially in poor countries of the third world.Historical increase in size

In almost all countries of the world, the average body size has increased significantly over the last 100 years. While German men were still approximately 13 cm smaller at the beginning of the 20th century, Spanish men increased over 14 cm and Iranians even over 16 cm. With the women, the height of South-Korean-women rose by over 20 cm.

These drastic increases are unique in the history of mankind. In no phase of the evolution humans became so much bigger, as since the industrial revolution at the end of the 18. century. In the preceding 1000 years both men and women did not grow at all on average and before that only by 1-2 cm per 1000 years.

Strikingly often a international comparison of penis sizes is requested here, which is now available on a separate page. Additionally an evaluation of the average cup sizes by country is now existing.

^ Where is Kosovo ? It has like an average height of 179-180 cm

I think you made a pretty good map, even showing the difference among people of the same countries or populations, nice job.

xzit,
I do not know. There are recent data from www worlddata info/average-bodyheight php

I'm very astonished when I read some posts about stature, someones are almost childish (sorry for the term).
the above metioned tables of statures are very mistaking.
To have good stature states we need states covering at least the 10 last years, and to be precise, we need regional states and separated ethnic states in immigration countries (a lot nowaday!).
There is no African or Asian or European mean body height. (or it's just an artefact of maths, not a significant tool to appreciate an homogenous population (there is no homogenous big pop in Europe nor elsewhere), it's a bit like putting carots and turlips in the same category). it will serve only as artificial tool to permit to use the terms like "over the mean, under the mean, in comparisons between diverse regions.
I agree with the ones who say that original european British people are, as a whole, higher than the most of Northern and Eastern Slavs (and here I'm myself using a too general average), I 'm sure Greek people are taller than genuine French people (but not than Alsacians!). And Kosovars are tall as a whole, close to the Ghegs (taller than Tosks, even if it could be less evident today than in past), as are the Montenegro and Bosnian people. Even Serbians are above the "European" mean.
Maciamo map is not parfect, sure: rather correct here, wrong there. the "national" mean stature of Romanians is rather in the European mean but in some places of the Carpathians people are very taller (or were ?). Me and Bretons friends toured in the North Carpathians of Romania, not the tallest region there, but I can tell you people there were neatly taller than us.
Some old myths are still alive among some people: the supposed high statured Irish people, surely calculated on Western Irishmen migrated to the USA. Irish people as a mean is maybe just over the European mean.
And Portugueses, as a whole are short, even if not "dwarves" (I feel some unpleasant contempt under this innocent word). But in past, when the mean was 1m63, two neighbouring regions of North-East there show places of 1m62 and other places of 1m67, so a 5cm difference!
in France, regions showed big differences in mean statures, even recently, and I can tell you than the most of African descendants freshly arrived here are very bigger than "white" Frenchies. The most, but I saw too, spite very less numerous, some very short "black" Africans, evidently of other ethnies and countries. It's the problem with stature, without to speak of the changes linked to lifestyle and life level.
Concerning parents and children ("dwarves" with "geant children"), let's took in account the above mentioned differences in lifestyle but also some diseases or anormal metabolic conditions putting people to grow TOO HIGH, questions of ossification and regulation of long bones or others anomalies... I'm not a specialist here but I had some examples; high stature is not always sign of health or strength. And to compare the skills or rather the results of diverse populations or countries in Basket-Ball competition with the aim to prove something about mean statures is RIDICULOUS; Germans are "null" in Rugby, so Germans are not robust enough or not courageous enough to play this sport? North-Africans are not very good in skiing so?...

xzit,
I do not know. There are recent data from www worlddata info/average-bodyheight php

Cool.

There are other studies that show some of those countries listed as even taller like Croatia, Norway, etc though I am not even sure any more as these different studies seem to vary a lot .

But I support that the average height in those countries isn't more than 1.80 . For example I live in Norway and they definitely aren't that much taller than the average Kosovar which apparently has an average height of 179.5cm or something according to a study.

Also average Bosnian height is more or less like 178-179 and average Croat height is something like that too... One study showed Norway as average height of 1.79-178 and another showed Germans as even lower while others higher

Maybe it depends on what part of these countries. I noticed people from Stavanger area are extremely tall.

And people in Bosnia and Hervegovina seem to vary a lot too depending on the region.... areas ranged from 1.79 to 1.85 or something according to a study.

The High Balkan heritage almost 2000 years ago.
"Maximinus Thrax 259 cm Emperor of Rome, first ever recorded person with gigantism. Height however may have been exaggerated.Gaius Iulius Verus Maximinus (c. 173–238), also known as Maximinus Thrax (i.e. Maximinus the Thracian) and Maximinus I, was Roman Emperor from 235 to 238.

Maximinus is described by several ancient sources (none of which, except for Herodian's Roman History, was actually contemporary with Maximinus) as the first barbarian who wore the imperial purple and the first emperor never to set foot in Rome. He was the first of the so-called barracks emperors of the 3rd century; his rule is often considered to mark the beginning of the Crisis of the Third Century. The 3rd tall men in the world.
Rise to power

According to the notoriously unreliable Historia Augusta (Augustan History), Maximinus was born in Thrace or Moesia to a Gothic father and an Alanic mother; however, the supposed parentage is highly unlikely, as the presence of the Goths in the Danubian area is first attested after the beginning of the Crisis of the Third Century.

Sir Ronald Syme, writing that "the word 'Gothia' should have sufficed for condemnation" of the passage in the Augustan History, felt that the burden of evidence from Herodian, Syncellus and elsewhere pointed to Maximinus having been born in Moesia. Most likely he was of Thraco-Roman origin (believed so by Herodian in his writings), and the references to his "Gothic" ancestry might refer to a Thracian Getae origin (the two populations were often confused by later writers, most notably by Jordanes in his Getica), as suggested by the paragraphs describing how "he was singularly beloved by the Getae, moreover, as if he were one of themselves" and how he spoke "almost pure Thracian". I like the detail in the netherlands. There is really a difference between north and south.

Genetic differences often arise thanks to geographic barriers like mountain ranges or rivers, but culture can shape populations, too — even in countries generally thought to be fairly homogeneous. In a recent study, Dutch researchers found a genetic border roughly separating the southeastern Dutch states of Brabant and Limburg from the rest of the Netherlands. The researchers noted the striking overlap of these genetic clusters with historical census maps of Protestant-majority vs. Catholic-majority districts.

With little over 1.80m i'm considered a manlet in the north.
