Updated July 2021

… with each update they strip away a piece of Italy from me, I started around 80%, maybe next update it will start going up again :)

Mine. Sad, though, that it's not as accurate at pinpointing Parma and the Lunigiana.

My New Ancestry Updated Results: Last result was 89% South Italy, 9% Greek/Albanian and 2% Norwegian (which I think was either noise or some Normal signal being picked up then). New Results increase my Greek/Albanian along with Aegean to 14%, not surprising, and still is showing the Norman signal of 2% (which might still be noise).

I don't even think it is necessarily due to Northern Italian input into Greek islands. But rather the AncestryDNA algorithm is scrambling the components because there is so much ancient ancestry overlap in the Greek/Balkan/South Italian regions. They all come from the pan-Mediterranean genetic continuum described in Aneli et al 2021, and further supported by Sarno et al 2021, and Olalde et al 2021. You and I are 100% (or at least close to) from Puglia, in the modern sense.


All four of my grandparents come from the same region, and all four of theirs' did as well.

We have no family history of ever coming from anywhere other than Puglia.

All my grandparents and their grandparents were born in the province of Lecce.

That's exactly right. Elite administrators of a ruling power, given their small numbers, are never going to change the autosomal make-up of the colonies. Did the English make Indians English like, even after centuries of rule?

Originally, ancestry had Southern Italy, Greece and Albania as one cluster. They are still operating under that paradigm. It's just that they're giving "precedence" to Greece, so Southern Italians have a lot of "Greek". If they gave "precedence" to Southern Italian, Greeks would have a lot of Southern Italian. Indeed, in some earlier editions, that's exactly what happened: a lot of Greeks found to their surprise that they had a lot of Southern Italian in them.

in AncestryDNA balkans means

The Balkan DNA region ( Croatia and Bosnia/Herzegovina ) is bordered by the Adriatic Sea to the west, countries including Romania and Hungary to the North and the Black Sea to the east. The Balkan Mountain Range stretches from near the Timbok River valley near the border that Serbia and Bulgaria share all the way to the beautiful cliffs at Cape Emine at the Black Sea.

......................it does not include ashkenazi jews nor Bulgars which came from the north-Caucasus...................it does include slavs

In the past it included Kosovo and Serbia but I am not sure it does in this latest data



But looking at what they gave me for my Balkans ............it has Serbia and Bulgaria ........but does NOT include Kosovo
