Geographically Europe is divided into West/East by the shortest line which connects the Adriatic Sea with the Baltic Sea. It is called the Baltic-Adriatic pass or narrowing (called przesmyk or przewężenie bałtycko-adriatyckie in Polish geographical/geopolitical studies):

Culturally, the division is more blurred - some say it overlaps with the limits of Latin Christianity, Romanesque and/or Gothic architecture, and the Renaissance (but this last criterion would for example exclude Ireland, which generally missed the Renaissance).
