It was kind of random. In the Bulgarian-Serbian border zone I was reading the histories of various villages. Some had founders, or early settlers with names like Leka, Kole, Joka (Gjoka?), Buzadzhi, Lale-Lalin. So I was simply googling to see if Leka is a common Bulgarian name and this info showed up.

I find it more interesting that a Bulgarian historian thinks there is Albanian toponyms from 10th-11th century between Plodiv and Sofia. I am sure that's not the case at present. Would be interesting to contact Hris and see what these historical toponyms are, were called.

Probably just Albanian migrations to Bulgaria and there was also a Arbanas village there

'Arbanas' : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbanasi_(Veliko_Tarnovo)

Gheg-Tosk split is much older than 10th-11th century. The dialect split is believed to be ancient going back to the period around 400-600 AD.

I'll say this though: Greeks and Albanians are very different in origin (from Bronze Age). During the Iron Age, they started converging closer and closer, until in modern times they became almost indistinguishable.

But, Proto-Illyrians clearly have a very different origin than Proto-Greeks, so I don't understand this whole "Graeco-Albanian" thing.

Leka (Paulician leader)

Leka (Lekas in Skylitzes Continuatus) was a Paulician leader in the 11th century Byzantine Balkans in the territory of contemporary Bulgaria.
He is mentioned in the History of Michael Attaleiates and in Skylitzes Continuatus partly based on information from Attaleiates. Lekas was a member of the Paulician Christian sect. He lived in Philippopolis (Plovdiv) and was married to a Pecheneg woman.[1] The Pechenegs north of the Danube in the 11th century had been influenced by Paulician ideas. In alliance with them and the Paulician leader Dobromir (Dobromiros in Skylitzes Continuatus) he launched a revolt in the eastern Balkans in 1078-79 in an attempt to become an independent ruler. In the revolt he killed Michael, bishop of Serdica (Sofia). Dobromir expanded in the region of Mesembria (coastal Bulgaria).[2] As the new Emperor Nikephoros III Botaneiates organized an army to send against them, they accepted the rule of the emperor and were given many gifts and privileges.
The mention of the Paulician Leka is the first mention of the Albanian name Leka and indicates that this individual may have been an Albanian.[2] As such, it is the first reference of a medieval Albanian by name by the same author (Attaleiates) who mentions medieval Albanians for the first time in Byzantine literature. The attestation of a Paulician Albanian suggests that Paulicians had become popular among Albanian groups. Toponymy between Sofia and Plovdiv in the 10th and 11th centuries indicates that (Proto-)Albanian populations had migrated from their native lands to the eastern Balkans before the era of Leka.[3] The next mention of the name Leka is three centuries later in the names of the brothers Leka (ancestor of Lekë Dukagjini) and Pal Dukagjini who held the city of Lezha.[4]

Hmmmmmmmmm
Hristo's conclusion is backward, because Albanian autochonous cannot be questioned, he thinks an early group of Albanians migrated to western Bulgaria.

One of the oldest documented instances of an Albanian name comes from the 11th century Paulician leader "Leka" (Λέκας) in Bulgaria.

Saldzhiev speculates that there may have been a proto-Albanian population in this mountainous region, referring also to the oikonym "Shtipon" that appears in a mountain village, and suggests Proto-Albanian mediation into Old Slavic.

He assumes that Proto-Albanians must have migrated to this region at some point, but what if there was no migration and there was simply a proto-Albanian substrate in this region?

Albanians are descended from Native Illyrians and Dacian or Thracian newcomers.
A good chunk of R1b is also of East Balkanic origin.

How many of the Illyrian R1b's are Z2103?

The way Y-DNA works, is large populations carry a lot of different clades, until one becomes popular. There is no "East Balkanic R1b".

Yamna had M269, L51, and Z2103. In some populations L51 gets more popular, in some Z2103 more popular, and in some rare ones M269 basal. The popularity later on of clades, is by no means determinative of ancestry.

Look at Illyrians. Some are Z638. Some are not. They originally carried a bunch of clades. In the southern parts Z638 became more popular, in the north more basal clades. They all share a common origin though.

This guy making up fake quotes that aren't in the book he's quoting again :LOL::LOL:

I wish there were some samples from the Albanoi in Illyria, but these are close enough geographically. The author's papers are outright admitting from the Middle Bronze Age, there has been no major shifts in DNA in Albanians (obviously some Roman Imperial/Slavic minor admixtures).

Given Messapic links, this paper showing Illyrian-Albanian continuity, Albanoi being outright Illyrian, anyone denying Illyrian-Albanian continuity at this point is just a brain dead troll. Let Hawk and co. make up fake theories, because he can't accept that EV-13 might have gone from 15% to 30% over thousands of years, when it happened in Greeks too. Greeks are "Thracians" too at this point.

Yeah, we probably came from the Albanoi or some related Illyrian tribe. Some of them probably lived in Dardania during Roman period after Roman-Illyrian wars together with Vlachs or from 900 AD and on wards during the Bulgarian Empire they spread East wards.

One of the oldest documented instances of an Albanian name comes from the 11th century Paulician leader "Leka" (Λέκας) in Bulgaria.

The chronology that would be required for Albanian mediation of a toponym into Slavic (as is in the case of Shtip) necessitates that the proto-Albanian population had to have been there before the Slavic one, so this Shtipon mountain village in between Sofia and Plovdiv must have had a proto-Albanian population before the Slavs were there.

...the town was called Stipon and Stipone (Стипон ; Стипоне) ,the name was changed during the Ottoman times.
The fortress in the so called Gate of Trajan/Βασιλική πύλη/ (16km SE) was named after the Roman military station , the Greeks called it Stenos , the Bulgarians - Shtipon . It has a very interesting form btw.

From the wikiepedia page:

Few details exist about Leca's early life, beyond his belonging to the boyar aristocracy. He was an Albanian and it is known that he had at least one brother, Comis Toma of Pătroaia

The church was built solely with the labor and assistance of the people of Gaber. Everyone has contributed to the good cause. Kole Gigov, any relation to this guy?

Лека/Леко (Leka,Leko) when in Bulgaria is usually diminutive from Alexi or Aleko.

Look yourself in the texts you quoted " Alexi Radenkov"---> "Leka Radenkov" , simple as that.

"-in" in the Bulgarian family names pertain to the village or the family the person stems from (for example Kole Mitrin can be Kole/Nikola of the Mitrevi family= Kole Mitrev...or Kole, son of Mitra (Dimitra), as sometimes the young widow's name would stick instead the father's. Same with Petre Lalin --->of Lalevi...or "the son of Lala". Both Lalyo(m.) and Lala(f.) are variants/diminutives of the Biblical name Lazar. Sometimes Lala can be a form of Zlata but that is rare).

There are several Gigov families and they probably stem from the Western Outlands and Macedonia, one of them is the author Nikola Gigov from

Now Belut is an interesting case...the others are plain no go.

The most surprising thing I did not expect was this relative absence of Z2103 from the core j2b-l283 area, if this actually holds up to be the case then the ramifications are huge.

It also seems to validate Matzinger's, Schumacher's, etc, arguments. They really do seem to have picked up on a valid linguistic signal with regard to East Alpine Block, Albanian and Illyrian non-congruence, etc.
