The best friend of the Iberian

Perro de presa canario

The Perro de Presa Canario, a.k.a. the Canary Mastiff, is a rare large Molosser-type dog breed originally bred for working livestock. The name of the breed is Spanish, means "Canarian catch dog", and is often shortened to "Presa Canario" or simply "Presa". The breed is sometimes also called Dogo Canario, meaning "Canarian Molosser". It is the animal symbol of the island of Gran Canaria.

My dog sort of has a split personality in terms of his reaction to other people/other dogs.

When we take him for walks around our area or at the dock or other parks where there are a lot of people, he's extremely friendly, going up to people licking their hands if they stroke him, smelling but playing nicely with the other dogs.

However, when he's in our house or yard and an unknown person or dog or cat or squirrel or God forbid raccoon comes anywhere near he goes absolutely mental. I can barely hold him back if we're outside. Thank God for invisible fences. My landscaper, who's been working for me for 20 years told me he wouldn't come in the house unless I lock him up in a separate room.

I honestly don't know where this comes from. We got him as a tiny pup, and he's the most gentle, sweet, affectionate dog I've ever had.

Maybe he does have some Rottweiler or Doberman in him? I'm not going to spend 200.00 to test him. I just would like him to be a bit more accepting of strangers.

He's much larger now, almost 75 pounds, extremely strong and muscular, but still looks exactly like this:

Probably the landscaper fears the dogs. Large dogs often scare many people for obvious reasons and if they also have a layer that can be mistaken for a Rotweiler even more.

Wow, my dog really looks like a Beauceron, except much bigger. He definitely doesn't have the Rottweiler face, but it may be in there somewhere, that or a bit of Doberman.

Well, on the bright side, my alarm system is now redundant. :) Unfortunately, all the ladies who take walks together in the morning now take a different route!

There are 6 recognized breeds of autochthonous dogs in Greece:

1. Greek shepherd (Ellinikos poimenikos) dog:

2. Greek scent hound (Ellinikos ichnilatis)

I'm partial to the scent hound, obviously. Looks a lot like my dog. :)

If I lived in Greece and wanted a dog I'd probably get a Kokoni:

Adorable. I'd get one if they were available here. Probably easier for me to handle too. My beloved brute almost tore my hand off last week when I went to a friend's house in the country. He saw a fox I think. I had the leash around my wrist. I'm not a very heavy woman, and he's seventy pounds of muscle and incredibly fast. He jerked it right off my wrist.

Very intelligent and companionable dog. You could probably get a rescue one if you lived in Europe. I don't know if they ever make it to these shores.
You could check.
