    Inspector Montalbano

The Inspector Montalbano detective or crime series is 20 years old this year.

It has been seen by one billion viewers worldwide.

    Obviously, they're doing something right.:)

For those who haven't seen a lot of them, they are on mhzchoice.com with English subtitles. I joined years ago for a month and watched them all, although I'd seen some before. Then each year I check to see if new ones have come out. To be fair, there are some good foreign films and series on that channel. You can join for two months, say, and then drop it.

I just found out yesterday that two of the 2019 episodes are on youtube. Unfortunately, there are no subtitles, so only for Italian speakers.

    This is one of them.

This is an interview with the whole cast. There's also an interview only with Luca Zingaretti. Lovely man in every sense. Everyone should age this way.

Of course, much of the luck of this series is due to the intelligent choice of some very good character actors. One of the best was Marcello Perracchio, unfortunately died in 2017. For all these years he has played the irascible, bloodthirsty and sarcastic Dr. Pasquano, the medical examiner advisor of the commissioner. Epic scenes!

I think it was a fitting send off to each eat a cannoli! :)

I really like Catarella too, even though he's pretty exaggerated. A heart of gold and funny as well. Some of my favorite scenes in the whole series are the earlier ones between Catarella and Montalbano.

For English speakers, the cast discuss their characters and Sicily as well. Such intelligent actors, which is not always the case.

There are some scenes with Perracchio in it, and Zingaretti discusses how so many of the comic scenes were improvised.

A conversation with Zingaretti which is subtitled in English.

He explains very clearly what I think is true about the series: it is the Sicily of the present seen through the eyes and with the values of someone much older, and I think Zingaretti is so right about the appeal of the Montalbano character as an old school gentleman set in modern times, with old fashioned views of friendship, of honor, and even of justice. He's no letter of the law man. :) I would add that he also exemplifies intelligence, strength, but also compassion and kindness.

He's a man of complete integrity. I wish there were more like him.

The kind of man so many women want and so many men want to be.
