But the DNA samples with which we share cM, are our certenly direct ascendants, or can they be relatives more or less close to our direct ascendants?

The Roman samples, however, do not give the certainty that they are really Roman, the study Ancient Rome: A genetic crossroads of Europe and the Mediterranean, does not say whether those samples are real Roman citizens or slaves deported to Rome.

The IRON Age samples pre-date the period when increased Slave Trade resulted in any significant number of slaves being bought into Rome. It wasn't until the 2nd Punic War that Rome acquired major territory outside of what is modern Italy. Jovialis has a thread (maybe several) that group the Roman samples to the various clusters defined in the paper, C5, C6, etc, etc. Those threads show pretty clearly how modern people with 100% of their ancestry from somewhere in modern Italy plot relative to the ancient Roman samples and the various clusters defined in that paper by Antonio et al 2019.

So while the Antionio et al 2019 paper did not clearly state who was Roman and who was slave, as that would be something that could not be stated with 100% certainty, and no reputable researcher would make any such claim without the data and statistical analysis to make such statement, a clear deep reading of the paper and results suggest who was in all likelihood local vs. non-local. Figure 2 clearly plots modern Italian populations, and other moderns, with the 127 ancient Roman samples. Figure 4 clearly plots them relative to population cluster and sub-structure, i.e. C6 cluster is the Mediterranean Cluster, C5 is East Mediterranean, C7 is European, etc, etc.

    I doubt it,

they were local Roman / Italian people,
notice the three Rome Centocelle samples below, they’re from different generations, but they share a chromosome position,
... an indication of ‘continuity’ all the way to the Renaissance and Me.

I think that there was a certain degree of sampling bias in this Roman paper. In my opinion, people don't take into consideration that native/Italic Romans practiced cremation (burning) of their dead.Cremation was the usual custom until about A.D. 100. Hence, geneticists won't have the DNA of all the cremated Romans especially from the nobles, aristocracy. However, I do think that the "Eastern Mediterranean" component was in Italy prior to any major influx of foreign people, and that the bulk of migrants was from Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, and to a lesser degree from Hellenized Anatolia. While we don’t really have the burial context, there are clear indications that not few of the sampled DNA were from non-locals, foreigners and slaves, too.

I share some cMs with this individual.
It's difficult to establish whether we are direct descendants. With most of the MTA samples - IMO - it's more likely they are individuals with whom we share even more remote ancestors, often lived in prehistoric ages (the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Metal Age ancestral components...).
Based on its PCA and the various oracles, R47 seems to have a fairly local autosomal: it could be a native of southern Italy, or - if Roman ethnic (i.e"central italic") - he shows partial eastern Mediterranean ancestry

... DNA is not biased. It just is,
... they have Northern and Southern Italian shifted samples,
... though you omitted mentioning the Northern Italian shifted samples,
... and there is not indication at all that the vast majority of the samples were foreigners or slaves,
... if that was the case, the R samples wouldn’t match the modern Italians so closely.

well but this doesn't exclude that they were equally non-Italic slaves, the slaves had children like the others didn't?

Does anyone have compatibility with samples from the latest Viking study such as:

Medieval San Lorenzo Foggia Italy 1240 AD - Genetic Distance: 12.02 - VK535 Top 99% match vs all users

How in a "Viking" cemetery / we in Italy say "Normans" there are samples that resemble ancient Mediterranean populations? Maybe even if the cemetery was "Viking" they also buried native southern Italians?

hese are the two samples with I share the most cM, do any of you have them? Did you find out any more information beyond that on mytrueancestry?
Emal: To follow up on my earlier response and to add to Salento's, I mentioned a thread on ancient Romans that Jovialis started. Very good and it uses different vahaduo calculators and runs the Antonio et al 2019 samples by population cluster. Have you looked into that thread. You can also go to vahaudo gentics online, it is free, and run the samples you are closest to against modern populations.

I don't want to mix threads as this is about MytrueAncestry but I quickly ran R107 and R73 on Eurognes K13 against K13 updated modern reference populations. R107 is no different, or very close (in terms of autosomal DNA) to Modern Italians from 1) Abruzzo, 2) Molise, 3) Sicily, 4) Apulia and 5) Basilicata, distances 4.3 to 4.9, respectively. R73 is closest to Greeks from Symi Island, distance of 6.6 and then Sephardi Jews at 6.9.

So back to the Jovialis Roman thread I mentioned. Jovialis, using Dodecad K7, classified all 127 samples from the Antonio et al 2019 study by the genetic clusters (e.g., C4, C5, C6, etc,). The R107 sample falls into the C6 genetic cluster as defined by Antonio et al 2019, which is why it is very close to modern Italians from Central Italy to the South (C6 cluster). The R73 sample falls into the C4 Near East cluster.

So take a look at vahaduo.genetics and run some of your closest Mytrueancestry samples against various calculators and again I would suggest find the Ancient Roman Thread that Jovialis started which has the samples classified into cultural clusters using the C1 to C7 classification from the Antonio et al 2019 paper.

Goodmorning, Does anyone have this sample in common like me?
I read the paper, in my opinion it must belong to a woman kidnapped by barbarians after invading Italy.
I get SZ19, ... but in my chrome analysis she does NOT share SNPs with my other samples.
    She’s alone.
... could be that SZ19's DNA is low in quality (17%), or she’s just different from them.
