note that I3313 is a female sample

I3313, Bronze Age, 1500-900 BCE

doi: https://doi.org/10.1101/135616

I3313
mtDNA: HV0e

the age of the sample would clearly make ( or a very good chance) this sample Illyrian/Dalmatian as the earliest "illyrians" appear in Noricum ( east Austria ) circa 1600BC

I'm aware that's a female sample. It's not of any significance to the autosomal signature.

The first mention of "Illyrians" is much later. Best to label these samples as Bronze Age Balkans. In this particular case, it's Croatia/Dalmatia.

A good number of the Late Antiquity and Medieval Era samples may very well have come from more northern parts of Europe; not everyone buried in a large urban center, particularly a site of pilgrimage, for example, is going to be a local.

A good number of the Late Antiquity and Medieval Era samples may very well have come from more northern parts of Europe; not everyone buried in a large urban center, particularly a site of pilgrimage, for example, is going to be a local.

That is very true. One way of estimating their place of origin is to run each medieval sample in Vahaduo and compare them to modern Dodecad K12b samples.

My father's closest match is R62, which indeed turns out to be closest to French, German and Dutch with a genetic distance of 8 to 9, so probably of Belgian origin. Ditto for R1288 and R106. R31 and R1286 both seem to be German. That settles it. So much for those suspiciously closes matches.

My mother has a few close matches that appear to be North Italian: R1220 (Medieval Cancelleria), R1224 (Medieval Cancelleria) and R108 (Late Antiquity Crypta Balbi). Her genetic distance is 6.3, 7 and 7.4 respectively.

It is good to have MTA as a source to know who the samples are about and to spread it to everyone.

I forgot to say that the samples that are blank is because I don't get that sample in the 200 examples of MTA and if I did get them, they must have disappeared.

@Carlos,

I think providing the links to the papers is a good idea, but imo their descriptions leave a whole lot to be desired. In the Empuries samples, for example, we have Spanish like samples, an Italian like samples, some Northern European like samples, and Greek Islander like samples. It was a trading post, so that's to be expected. I don't think that comes across clearly from mta's descriptions, however.

What I've taken to doing is using the updated K12b with modern samples and running the K12b coordinates for the ancient samples. It gives you a hint of what they're like in modern terms.

By doing that, it became clear that a lot of the Late Antiquity and Early Medieval samples in Rome were clearly visitors from elsewhere. The same is true for samples from the Imperial period. Whether the people in both cases were transients or stayed and contributed to the gene pool is unknown and unknowable.

The authors of the paper did do isotopic analysis for some of the samples, but not all, and even then, this is an inexact science.

That's my main complaint about the study. You can't assume that each and every one of the Imperial samples were "locals" or that the "foreigners" necessarily became part of the gene pool of the future. Clearly, some would have, but some might not. Nor do we know whether the more "Northern" samples came from over the Alps, or, say, Northern Italy, whether the more "Southern" samples came from Southern Italy, or Greece or places in the Near East.

That's why I think it's so important that we know what southern Italy and Greece looked like genomically in the Iron Age. It's also why I think the Iron Age samples are so important.

In what I have hung here above I have no sample of Ampuries.

In the autosomal of the modern ones it would have to be seen

I think of the Alps. I think of Southern Italy, that in turn would have received in even older times from southern Greece, the Near East and North Africa.

IIRC isotopic analysis only gives you where you where in the world prior to being a teen .............I think it would be somewhat accurate
