Health New Coronavirus in China

Yep, mass transportation & high-rise apartment complexes are petri-dishes.

Attached housing doesn't seem to make a difference...

Bedford Stuyvesant: a minority area with sky high rates...they do have high rise projects as well, though.

Bensonhurst and Bayridge: very Italian communities with low rates...

Our area's breakdown by race today: 131 white, 36 black 26 hispanics, 10 other and 18 unknown. The racial breakdown is 74% white, 10.7% hispanic or latino 9.2% black.
The population of Brevard County, FL is 73.9% White Alone, 10.7% Hispanic or Latino, and 9.2% Black or African American Alone.

BTW, I am seeing more and more violations of stay at home orders. Unrelated families with kids socializing at the beach or in the parking lot of the building next door, teenagers or college age kids walking together. People are getting tired of isolation.

Maybe that explains the lower numbers in places like India?

Now that Trump pulled their funding the WHO is finally going to include Taiwan in its considerations, although still not as a member. It's a disgrace.

If they'd done that in the beginning we'd all be a lot better off. Taiwan got it right. China didn't.

This is what comes of cowering in fear of China.

Trump is a jerk imo. I can't even watch his portion of the daily briefing, but he was right about this. Now they sat up and took notice.

I want to thank the @WHO
for finally acknowledging Taiwan's relative success in handling #COVID19. Going forward, I hope uttering the word "Taiwan" is never going to be an issue and our requests to participate in technical meetings are never turned down again.

Can someone explain to me what possessed people to go on a cruise within the last month or six weeks???? One of these cruises left in March!

At least seven more of Carnival's ships at sea have become virus hot spots, resulting in more than 1,500 positive infections and at least 39 fatalities. There are also still about 3,200 passengers and crew at sea aboard the company's ships http://trib.al/8B9JIxW

Another epic fail by the WHO...face masks won't help.

Oh yeah?

The German city of Jena, unlike the rest of the country, introduced mandatory wearing of face masks in shops and public transport about two weeks ago. Since eight days they've not had a single new #coronavirus infection #maskeauf

There were not enough masks for even the health providers much less the general public. So I think as far as medical masks are concerned they did the right thing. But they should have told the general public tower self made masks.

It's the same thing that happened with Israel. What I don't understand is why the US has been kowtowing to China when it comes to Taiwan.

  • Belgium has highest number of daily coronavirus deaths of any country when compared to population size
  • But ministers say this is because they are counting deaths outside hospitals and suspected cases in their tally
  • Other European countries - including the UK - have been accused of failing to add these figures to their total
  • Deaths outside hospital make up half Belgium's tally, meaning toll elsewhere could be double official figure
Belgium has the highest number of daily coronavirus deaths per head of population of any country in the world - but ministers say this is only because they are being more transparent with their data.
The European nation had reported 4,857 deaths from coronavirus as of Thursday, an increase of 417 in 24 hours, despite having a relatively small population of 11.6million people.
But, unlike many of its European neighbours, it is counting deaths outside of hospital and deaths where the patient had coronavirus symptoms but had not been tested in those figures.
These deaths account for almost half of Belgium's total, meaning that the true scale of coronavirus deaths in other countries could be double the official figures if that trend is replicated elsewhere.

Lol,
China counted them 1 or 2 months after,
because the world realize their 'numbers'

Chinese study (preprint, not yet peer reviewed) analyzed 318 Covid-19 outbreaks, found *all but one* happened indoors. The risk of transmission in fresh air still appears negligible.

I personally wouldn't take that to heart: the biggest German cluster was from an outdoor Carnevale event. If you're packed together, in or out doesn't matter.

Takeaways from CV study in Bavaria: Children rarely transmit the virus; virus in feces appears non-infectious, merely touching surfaces doesn't transmit virus unless they're freshly/intensely infected; fresh air disperses CV, sunlight's UV kills it.

If we took that as incontrovertible fact, we should forget about being so manic about disinfecting surfaces, open all the windows and keep them open, keep teens, not toddlers away from grandparents, and stay away from our elderly parents ourselves, and wear masks all the time, as it seems it's airborne, close contact indoors that is the culprit.

When you see a report showing that very many asymptomatic people test positive for COVID-19, be skeptical unless those people have been quarantined for longer than the incubation period.

WHO warns that coronavirus antibodies can't guarantee long-term immunity

The World Health Organization warned that coronavirus antibodies can't guarantee long-term COVID-19 immunity for recovered patients or former asymptomatic carriers.
In a press conference on Friday reported by multiple outlets, officials said serological tests, also known as antibody tests, can show if the person previously contracted the virus, but there is no evidence it can find if a person is immune to the virus infection.
At least 564,525 people have recovered from COVID-19 across the world, according to data from Johns Hopkins. However, issues with developing and distributing reliable tests described by experts likely mean that there are many more cases that have gone undetected and untreated.
Antibody tests have been touted as a crucial step in the move to reopening workplaces and public spaces, as they would be able to tell whether a person has already had COVID-19, regardless of whether they ever showed symptoms. A positive result would mean they're probably immune.
President Donald Trump has recommended states roll out testing as areas begin to relax social distancing measures that have been in place in recent weeks. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said last week that he expected a large number of tests to become available within the next week.
Fauci previously warned that the novel coronavirus could likely become "seasonal" with the possibility of a resurgence in the outbreak later this year, which is motivating public officials to improve the country's preparedness, including developing a vaccine and other interventions.
The earliest the US could get a coronavirus vaccine would be in 12 to 18 months, which would be an impressive timeline for a vaccine, Fauci has said.
The WHO press conference came after officials said not all people who recover from the coronavirus have the antibodies to fight a second infection, raising concern alongside rising trends in countries like South Korea where officials have found at least 160 patients who were thought to have been cleared of the new coronavirus had tested positive again.
Dr. Jon Santiago, who is also a state representative, works in the ER at Boston Medical Center, told CBS Boston that hospital workers had noticed a concerning trend of repeat patients who often require more intensive care than they did during their initial treatment.
"Over the last week we've seen an interesting phenomenon where people who've been initially diagnosed a week ago, they're coming back to the hospital sicker and often requiring a ventilator or the ICU," Santiago told WBZ. "That just demonstrates how insidious the virus can be."

There appears to be large regional variations for susceptibility, severity and mortality for Covid-19 infections. We set out to examine genetic differences in the human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2) gene, as its receptor serves as a cellular entry for SARS-CoV-2. By comparing 56,885 Non-Finnish European and 9,197 East Asians (including 1,909 Koreans) four missense mutations were noted in the hACE2 gene. Molecular dynamic demonstrated that two of these variants (K26R and I468V) may affect binding characteristics between S protein of the virus and hACE2 receptor. We also examined hACE2 gene expression in eight global populations from the HapMap3 and noted marginal differences in expression for some populations as compared to the Chinese population. However, for both of our studies, the magnitude of the difference was small and the significance is not clear in the absence of further in vitro and functional studies.

One recent study showed that the 1.5m social distance advised in Belgium may not be enough to protect against the cloud of droplets ejected by the force of a cough or sneeze – droplets which carry the virus and can travel up to 8m.
Now, a study from the National Institutes of Health demonstrates that the same droplets are expelled – albeit with much less force – when simply speaking.
The test subjects, all healthy volunteers, were asked to say the words “stay healthy” in a normal speaking voice, into a box. The droplets then passed through a film of laser light, and were photographed and measured.
The research found that the simple statement produced “numerous droplets” measuring between 20 and 500 micrometres – one micrometre is one-thousandth of a millimetre. Speaking more loudly produced more droplets, and the “th” sound in the word “healthy” produced the most.
The droplets themselves were smaller than those produced by a sneeze, but about the size which some studies have shown are produced by a cough. Because of the way the experiment was set up, it was not possible to measure the distance travelled by the droplets.
The most important result of the experiment, apart from demonstrating the existence of droplets produced during normal speech, was the effectiveness of a face mask.
Many if not most people think the face mask they wear when they go outside is to protect them from infection by the virus, despite the fact that it can enter through the eyes.
Medical professionals know, and have stressed since the beginning, that a mask is more effective in protecting others, and this study supports that view.

A substantial body of research already showed that the masks, designed for one-time use, can be reused in a crisis. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in March authorized reuse because of shortages driven by the Covid-19 pandemic. In recent weeks the Food and Drug Administration has issued emergency approvals for several systems of mask decontamination.
None of these rules or methods are intended for the cloth masks recommended or in some locations required for use by everyone in public. The C.D.C. advises regular washing of homemade fabric masks in a washing machine.
Vaporized hydrogen peroxide, a method often available in large hospitals, was effective, and left the masks still functioning for at least three rounds of decontamination, as did UV light.
Dry heat, at 70 degrees Celsius or 158 degrees Fahrenheit, was effective, but the masks withstood only two rounds of decontamination. Dr. Munster said that “vaporized hydrogen peroxide would be the method of choice if that’s available.” However, he said, a nursing home might not have that, while for dry heat, what’s needed is basically an oven.
Another recent study from Canadian researchers, also not yet peer reviewed, confirmed the value of decontamination. It included masks of different brands and found that the material of the mask was still effective after 10 rounds of vaporized hydrogen peroxide decontamination.

first deaths reported was in the hospitals, but there daily deaths are diminishing
now most deaths are from resting houses for the elder people
their numbers are still rising
reports from resting houses also often have delays
most of them have not been tested, but there is a suspicion of corona because of symptoms
with those vulnerable and already sick elder people, maybe death cause is something else, even if they have corona symptoms

maybe in half a year they can compare stats of yearly deaths in thos resting houses with 2020 to figure out what was the extra number of deaths caused by corona
every country should do this

... You can use UV Light to sanitize a used mask from Covid-19 too !

The question was asked at a conference call managed by the Town, after the Governor signed an Executive ORDER requiring Masks or Cloth Face coverings.

Thanks for that addition. It seems to me that spraying them every night with hydrogen peroxide would damage them, although they say it's good for ten uses. Also thanks for the heads up on getting a UV light. BTW, the portable travel one came first and had easy instructions. The room size one only had instructions in Chinese, the you know whats. I don't normally curse, but... I had to paste the instructions into a translator. :) Needless to say, I vastly overpaid for them.

I swear to God, if after this is under control we don't de-couple our supply chains from China I'm going to start or join a boycott of any company refusing to do so.
