Even in our modern era, epidemics are a force for selection. I parked near a liquor store today. The owner had put out a card machine on a long cord, and a bottle of sanitizer so they could clean their hands before and after. He would come to the door to listen to the order and then return with the bottle(s) already in a brown paper bag, so he never touched them.

They weren't all derelicts, really, and yet they all stood much closer to each other than six feet, most didn't have masks, and the few who did kept on adjusting them by touching the outside of them! Oh, and only half used the sanitizer at all.

I also saw another paper about how it hits men so much harder; 60% in some places, even more in others. It just occurred to me: I wonder if the plague has this kind of skew? There have been a few small modern outbreaks, but I don't know if they looked for that.
