Health New Coronavirus in China

I guess they've done the calculation and elderly people are more at risk in the homes than with their families, even with the danger coming from young people bringing it in.

Britain:
"This is going to be a really hard read for a lot of people: If you can get your relatives out of seniors’ homes, try to do so as fast as you can - The Globe and Mail"

This has been my feeling from the beginning as to what happened in Lombardia: it had spread from Wuhan long before anyone outside of East Asia was aware there was a problem.

I saw a report yesterday that checking back in the records, someone died of it in Italy in the beginning of January if I remember correctly.

"NEW: Brazil has determined that a woman who died on January 23 was infected with coronavirus, more than a month before South America's first confirmed case - G1"

"Supermarkets are high-risk sites of infection for Covid-19 because of a disregard of hygiene standards, a group of health, environmental and development professionals has claimed."Despite some supermarkets exercising caution with standards improving in recent days, the inconsistency in upholding standards is worrying," the Irish Global Health Network said in a statement as it published guidelines for shoppers to help reduce the spread of Covid-19.
The guidelines set out a number of protocols to help the public protect themselves before, during and after shopping to help reduce the incidence of the highly infectious disease.
The guidelines are set out in a four-page booklet "A quick guide to safe shopping during the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic".
Guidelines include using the non-dominant hand to pick up goods, which subsequently reduces the cross-contamination risk from touching of the mouth, nose or eyes; making contactless payments and avoiding contact with surfaces of any kind.
The guidelines state that because the "Coronavirus can survive on hard surfaces" that shoppers should "wipe the outside of all canned/hard surface pack goods (tetra packs) with a paper towel/warm soapy water" or "alternatively leave non-perishable foods in a safe place for 72-hours".
The guidelines also suggest that because of the capacity of the virus to live on surfaces, shopping trolleys, baskets, pin pads, they and other regularly touched items should be sanitised after each use.
Environmental Health Specialist and Irish Global Health Network Spokesperson, Niall Roche said: "We know that the virus can survive on hard surfaces such as plastic and stainless steel for up to 72 hours.
"It can live on cardboard for up to 24 hours. Supermarkets should adhere to the same guidance and practices that are being exercised in healthcare facilities, particularly for vulnerable shoppers.""

Confinement has caught me here, that would be my place if I fall

WAPO: "Scientists don’t rule out that an accident at a research laboratory in Wuhan might have spread a deadly bat virus that had been collected for scientific study."

I think we also had this discussion here.

"S0me people have argued that if a population’s average life expectancy is 80, while the average of those dying from coronavirus is 79 years, they’ve only lost a year of life. Not so: life expectancy at birth may be 80, but someone who is 79 has already survived all the slings and arrows that might have killed him earlier: on average he would live another 9 years or so. Misanthropic Principle. People are not built like the wonderful one-hoss shay: problems accumulate with age, but most chronic diseases do not confer a clear expiration date ( some do: we could make a pretty accurate prediction if you had pancreatic cancer, or glioblastoma.) When you hit the average life expectancy, does anything dramatic happen? Do you turn into a pile of dust that looks as if it’s been ground in the mill? “All at once and nothing first, just as bubbles do when they burst”? No way. You get up, go outside, and tell those damn kids to get off your lawn."

There is also this:
excess mortality: "First reflections with @matheusagaso
on ISTAT data on mortality 2019-2020: in the province of Bergamo +454% of deaths compared to the same period last year, Cremona +285%, Piacenza +263%, Lodi +247%."

That's what happens when you base a society on people who seemingly have the "correct" ideological leanings, and obedience, rather than technical qualification and aptitude. The same kind of biases combined with corruption led to the appalling incompetence that brought about the Chernobyl disaster. Now the whole world suffers for it. They can't even produce adequate medical supplies to bribe the world with.

I prefer use the slip underwear, but this lady discovered another use to the boxerbriefs. Very creative.

That's not unique for China or the USSR......

False equivalency, fringe supporters, pundits, and internet-nobodies are not in charge of the organization of U.S. society:

Fringe supporters of Donald Trump have turned on the White House disease expert Dr Anthony Fauci, as rumours about tension between the pair were aired this week.

In fact, this is from the same article you cited:

Republicans and most Trump supporters have, however, moved to back Mr Fauci. “I think he’s obviously excellent at his job, and I think he’s aware that he’s on that stage to offer detail and help finesse language, and he seems cool with it,” said Raheem Kassam, the former editor of Breitbart London and host of the podcast “War Room”.

On Tuesday, the president appeared to rebuke claims about his relationship with Mr Fauci, after he called his performance “very good”.

So far in LT there are

9 deaths
696 infected
18432 tested (0,67% of the total population)
There are 124 coronapatients in hospitals, 15 in ICU, and 5 out of them with automated ventilation, 32 with oxygen masks

For comparison, in South Korea there are 0,86% of the total population tested, though their epidemic started much earlier than in Europe.

According forecast, the infections should peak in a week (by April 5- April 12) and deaths (by May 1)
Within the long term prognosis - there should be about 4,500 - 6,000 infections by the end of the year and about 208-248 deaths due to coronavirus in LT
(the overall population is 2.7 million) The numbers are without taking into consideration the second autumn wave.

LT started the lockdown on March 15 with 7 reported cases, the quarantine is difficult for business, but not very strict in terms that people may go out (by twos) wherever they want to and also may travel within the country. The local resorts decide themselves if they want to accomodate people from other locations.

Let's see if these forecasts hold true.

In fact, this is from the same article you cited:

I don't know how much of the problem is inability to interpret the subtleties of English/think rationally, and how much is deliberate misrepresentation.

Not that it matters; you're right; it's still false equivalency.

Here is yet another example of garbage reporting:

Title:

Experts and Trump’s advisers doubt White House’s240,000 coronavirus deaths estimate

content:

The experts said they don’t challenge the numbers’ validity
but that they don’t know how the White House arrived at them...At a task force meeting this week, according to twoofficials with direct knowledge of it, Anthony S. Fauci, director of theNational Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told others there aretoo many variables at play in the pandemic to make the models reliable: “I’velooked at all the models. I’ve spent a lot of time on the models. They don’ttell you anything. You can’t really rely upon models.”...Almost the entirety of what the public knows about the deathprojection was presented on a single slide at a briefing Tuesday from the WhiteHouse coronavirus task force. A White House representative said the task forcehas not publicly released the models it drew from out of respect for theconfidentiality of the modelers, many of whom approached the White Houseunsolicited and simply want to continue their work without publicity.

I agree with you.
But in case of corona and the US President:
'Cast out the beam in thine own eye' (nice old English ;)

Or is this garbage reporting too?

Epidemiologist Slams ‘Malpractice’ In New York Times’ Trump Coverage

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/epid...mes-trump-coverage_n_5e837b55c5b603fbdf4a7c6b

I's literally noted that Trump initial downsized the corona virus despite the judgement of experts. That's easy to fact check.

I would say, paraphrasing (just changed two words) your citation:

That's what happens when you base a society on people who seemingly have the populist ideological leanings, and obedience, rather than technical qualification and aptitude. The same kind of biases combined with corruption led to the appalling incompetence that brought about the corona disaster. Now the whole world suffers for it. They can't even produce adequate medical supplies to bribe the world with.

(needless to say that this a pure personal opinion/estimation)
