- Cecchinelli (surname found in Latium, Tuscany, Liguria and Lombardy) => possibly from Caecinus, an Etruscan gens. The Latin 'Cae' invariably becomes 'Ce' in Italian. The Latin 'ci' becomes 'chi' in Italian to keep the hard k sound. That gives the root 'Caecin' => 'Cecchin' + the '-elli' ending.
Cecchin......my matron of honour's surname....from Padua and sometimes Mestre ...............slang is Cecco, short for Francesco
Barbato .............ato endings in surnames originate in the Veneto , same with igo, otto, lin and olo to name a few .............name was Barbo ....a barbarian
you can have also, Barbotto, Barbolin and Barbigo ( pure venetian surname, which igo endings are usually )
