    • Cecchinelli (surname found in Latium, Tuscany, Liguria and Lombardy) => possibly from Caecinus, an Etruscan gens. The Latin 'Cae' invariably becomes 'Ce' in Italian. The Latin 'ci' becomes 'chi' in Italian to keep the hard k sound. That gives the root 'Caecin' => 'Cecchin' + the '-elli' ending.

Cecchin......my matron of honour's surname....from Padua and sometimes Mestre ...............slang is Cecco, short for Francesco

Barbato .............ato endings in surnames originate in the Veneto , same with igo, otto, lin and olo to name a few .............name was Barbo ....a barbarian
you can have also, Barbotto, Barbolin and Barbigo ( pure venetian surname, which igo endings are usually )

Postumia is a town and a major road in Veneto ( south of Montebelluna ) ...the road is roman built and joined in the past Lombardy to Friuli through Veneto

a lot of christian names became surnames ...like Santo , became Santolin as a surname
    or
Zane ( Giovanni ) became Zanotto, Zanolo, Zanato or Zanatta ( from Giovanna )
    or
Zorsi ( giorgio ) became Zorzon ( big George )

For Cecchinelli, the highest concentration seems to be in La Spezia and the the Lunigiana. Some of the ones in Lombardia and Lazio will be migrants from there, although probably not all.

When you go to the link you can click the second map of Italy to get another and perhaps better view of it.

It's not a Genova and West Liguria thing at all. It's the La Spezia province and Lazio, and then Lunigiana.

You can also click on the U.S. map: Massachusetts wins.

Yes, also Sarzana 4, Arcola 3, Vezzano Ligure 1.

Those are my maternal grandfather's areas.

I knew as soon as I saw the name: it's a very "local" one in our parts, especially concentrated around the "bocca" of the Magra, not the northern stretches, although it picks up again north of the Appennini.

Cecchini, which is a variant, is a very common surname in Italy, still north of Rome, and with a huge presence in Northwestern Toscana and the Romagna.

Whether the men all carry this y lineage is another story.
