Thomas Edison probably belonged to haplogroup R1b-L151>S1194>S1200

The great American inventor Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931) appears to have belonged to R1b-L151>S1194>S1200>S14328>SZ5489>Y28597>S10242
according to the Edison Y-DNA project (lineage 1). He is descended from John Edison and Sarah Ogden from the Netherlands. This branch of R1b is found in Denmark and the Netherlands and is of Germanic origin.

Edison was of one of the most prolific inventors in history with 1,093 US patents in his name. He invented among others the phonograph, the automatic telegraph, the movie camera, the alkaline battery and the long-lasting, practical electric light bulb.

As Tesla's L1029 cousin, I would like to point out old Nikola was the brains behind electricity, while Edison was the showman who got all the credit. Edison made money; Tesla is on it, the Serbian 100 Dinar note. Although it is interesting to see someone from a rare L51 clade, one of those that aren't U106 or P312.

This is very interesting news as S1194 is also attributed to the Adams presidents of the US (number 2 and 6 ) and their Cousin Samuel Adams. I will check Edison’s SNPs against the Adams and post back. The two presidents were John Adams (2) and John Quincy Adams (6).

Just a comment to correct a misunderstanding from the parent post. The Edison family came from Yorkshire in England. Edward Edison b Yorkshire in 1680, went to the us and had a family that ultimately produced Thomas Edison.

also, S1194 is from Scandinavia and Nth Germany with lesser numbers in surrounding countries. But today is strongest in the UK which can be best attributed to arrivals from Scandinavia. The oldest known S1194 burials are on the Faroe Islands (part of Denmark).

Yes, our new S1194 ancestor Mr Edison, has his good points and without doubt his bad. But we will forgive him and regard his bad points as merely living up to his Scandinavian pillaging nature :)

Edison (Edeson) does pass for a good Danish/Swedish name. Plus the family being from around York further supports his Scandinavian DNA. York was the capital of the Danelaw part of England.
