Am I wrong in saying it kind of sounds like proto country music? I like it.

It's indeed proto country, and parts of it worked into the beginnings of rock and roll.

I like it a LOT.

The ballads all used to be song by the folk singers of the sixties and seventies.

Two of my favorites are Scottish, not Ulster Scots Irish but it's basically the same.
