As far as I know, some samples may have been disregarded due to quality issues.
Not sure why some of them are not there though. The Sintashta samples from Allentoft et al. are examples (?).
Plus, some results may differ. For instance, the coordinates for I0231 informed here are different from the (preliminary) coordinates informed for the same sample here (from Celtic Paper). Don't know iif the coordinates may change in each run or if they dynamically change as more samples integrate the model or whatever.

Anyway, you could try it with the ancient scaled and modern scaled coordinates available for the G25 PCA and see what Vahaduo shows.

Germanic and Slavic make sense (although Balkans should have some Germanic ancestry from Goths, at least 5-15%). West Balkan and East Balkan make no sense at all. Why are Sardinians so high in "East Balkan"? Germans and Belgians have more "West Balkan" than Albanians.

You designed a calculator to design a division between "West Balkan" and "East Balkan" and ended up designing a calculator that's only accurate for Germanic and Slavic. Like it's been mentioned multiple times, that Bulgarian IA or whatever is some weird outlier that has little to do with modern populations. It shouldn't be used as a reference point.

1. You are employing ghost populations made of averages. Populations that might not have existed.
2. You are picking and choosing which samples represent what to fit the hypothesis, rather than test it.
a)Slavic average you have looks Baltic
b)West Balkan average looks anything but West Balkans (in fact my criticism was that you arrived at this conclusion excluding much better fitting samples, while at the same time relying on anachronism(LBA Panonians, IA Croatians... and synthetic averaging)
c)Your hypothesis about E-V13 is the basis the synthesizing and averaging of the East Balkan components, so the model would naturally churn out Albanians as overwhelmingly East Balkan.

My hope is this is just confirmation bias and nothing sinister, but as you read from my edit of the comment over at Anthro, when I tried to replicate your model without some of the flaws it fell apart.

Try this:
Make it a BA+IA model, so that way you can keep the LBA Panonians, while at the same time satisfy the MBA-LBA Croatians. Use individual samples so we are not dealing in synthetic populations that might not have existed and test your hypothesis?

Its either that, or I think once the Southern Arch paper comes out and you compare your averages to actual representative samples, some of which you named but quite a few you did not, your model might fall apart.

West Balkan is related to Celtic, that's why. Its the ancestry of the MBA-EIA Tumulus culture and Urnfield groups. If you check them on a PCA, they just score fairly Western, which is why they approach more Southern Celtic ancestry, which Germans have. If you check Croatians and Slovenians, or Hungarians, they all score like that.
The Central and Eastern Balkan were respectively closer to each other. You need to know the background of this groups before judging that way.

But of course, its just an experiment and not to be taken all too serious. But I guess the main problem is not that my concept is that flawed, but that we lack some crucial (Central and Eastern Balkan in particular) samples. From the Central Balkan we have zero and from the Eastern Balkan only two proxies. Therefore there can't be an optimal model at this point.

Actual Croats don't score west Balkan IA. Croatian average consists of people from capital mixed with Germans.
I doubt slovenians have any west balkan either, they just have balkan with german-celtic admix and when you mix that two you get close to west balkan IA

Thracians are much better fit for south slavs. illyrian population got rekt

The larger the samples the better. Just recently there were medical samples from Hamburg and Erlangen published and converted into G25. The usefulness of G25 can easily be shown by looking at those individual samples. Its easy to sort out the outliers and those which don't fit into the regional pattern. Again, the larger the sample size, the easier it gets. Peer review became by now discredited in a lot of instance, you can't trust any source just like that, you always have to check yourself or by trusted parties. Point is, G25 is useful and reliable in and by itself, as for the samples, it differs. David usually used the better ones available, but for some people, there is just a lack of good samples or even peer reviewed studies included a lot of outliers which distort the results.
This is something G25 itself can correct, by simply checking for outliers.
Like if a sample from Hamburg gets more 80 percent Slavic, it won't be from a local Northern German farmer lineage, I guarantee you that.

Like with any new tool or product, you need to get used to it. From my point of view, unscaled is better if the distances are very big and you search for more exotic admixture, while scaled is the better choice within a set of related components, like intra-European. That's why I would primarily use scaled in the European context, but if people have extra-European ancestry, unscaled might work better sometimes.

By IBM, I assume you mean Iberomaurusian. On the contrary, it is a very important component that is the only way to definitively gauge North African/Levantine admixture. Natufian is inadequate because there's too much overlap with Anatolia_N.


Natufians are 73% Anatolia_N-like (Dzudzuana), and the rest is Iberomaurusian.


Many studies use Iberomaurusian as one of the ultimate source populations for west Eurasians.

Here is what I mean, it seems to do a good job at demonstrating how different Bolshoy_Ostrov and Iberomaurusian are. However, just look at the jumbling of the Farmer ancestry. This is why imho, Dodecad is the superior calculator for Southern Europeans.

I just used the basic European components, which makes IBM very Neolithic like. If I would have done a PCA with extra-European, especially Subsaharan, they would plot completely different.
Its therefore not G25 missing, I just made a European framework to which IBM doesn't (fully) belong.

I just used the basic European components, which makes IBM very Neolithic like. If I would have done a PCA with extra-European, especially Subsaharan, they would plot completely different.
Its therefore not G25 missing, I just made a European framework to which IBM doesn't (fully) belong.

That's because SSA breaks the projection when you put them against West Eurasians.

There's nothing wrong with my modeling. It is used in recent papers, including the Antonio paper, which those Imperial samples are from. I think you are missing the point.

How is it "Neolithic" like? I already showed you they're radically different on the PCA.
