Will the EU ever create a united standing military that overshadows in size and strength the individual militaries of each respective member nation of the EU?
The EU seems to be wanting to head in the direction of a United States of Europe, with each member country still weilding a large degree of independence within its traditional borders. Could the militaries of each state ever become regional National Guards? -- like in the U.S. each state has a national guard, but is dwarfed in size and strength to the national Military.
I know that the EU is peicing together a special rapid reaction force, but that is going to be small.
Will the militaries ever meld into one another for the benefit of the continent to give it more super power status in affecting national interests that could require force, or the threat of force?
