They're talking about the first urban centers NORTH OF THE ALPS, not that the LARGEST URBAN CENTERS WERE NORTH OF THE ALPS.

Were you born in Australia? Is English your second language or something? Then there might be an excuse.

The first urban centers of EUROPE were found in the Neolithic "OLD EUROPE" of the Balkans millenia before. You know, the urban centers which the ancestors of Hallstatt Culture destroyed.

Had he cared enough to actually READ the paper instead of just the abstract (the first couple of paragraphs would have been enough), he would have seen this:
