Abstract

It has been unclear how the periods of Roman and later Germanic political control shaped the demography of the Iberian Peninsula and how Iberia differs in these respects from other parts of the Roman Empire. We report genome-wide data from 248 ancient individuals from the largely unsampled period 100-800 CE and co-analyze them with previously reported data. In the Roman era, we document profound demographic transformation, with an influx of people with ancestry from the Central and Eastern Mediterranean in all the areas under study and of North Africans, especially in central and southern Iberia. Germanic (Buri, Suebi, Vandals & Visigoths) and Sarmatian (Alans) took over political control beginning in the 5th century, and although we identify individuals with Germanic-associated ancestry at sites with Germanic-style ornaments and observe that such individuals were closely related across large distances as in the case of two siblings separated by 700 km, for Iberia as a whole, we observe high continuity with the previous Hispano-Roman population. The demographic patterns in Iberia contrast sharply with those in Britain, which showed the opposite pattern of little change in the Roman period followed by great change in the Migration period, and also from demographic patterns in the central Mediterranean where both periods were associated with profound transformation, raising broader questions about the forces that precipitated change over this time.

Nice to see two J2-L70 (Z2177), a Roman and a Visigoth, in Iberia on this period. Another ancient Roman sample under J-L70 and the second Visigoth under J-Z2177.

That's a large sample size for 100-800 CE! Unexpected that the migration period left little impact.
It is a question of numbers, 100,000 Visigoths and 20,000 to 40,000 (according to some historians) Suevi, the invading population was too small to have a significant demographic impact.
An important geographic area to understand the Migration period was however left out of this study, the northwest of the peninsula, Galicia and northern Portugal, where the Suevi settled.

Happy to see the first ancient sample belonging to my Y-Chr branch, I-SK1258. A Visigoth with an ancestry of 54% CNE and 46% Spain Iron Age, sample I19904.
Without a doubt a great genetic study!
Glad to finally find some connections to your haplogroup!

This study is very complete.
What big conclusions did you draw from the entire study?

So it has been "confirmed" that both the Suebi and the Visigoths did not leave a significant impact on Iberia, correct?

So what proportion of Iberian Iron Age do modern Iberians have?

Even approximately.

The J2a map resembled the Roman borders, and this was believed to be a main line of Italic settlers but it was in fact an IA Anatolian line spread by Romans.

The Italic military settlers were mainly in Baetica (southern Iberia) and most arrived during the Late Republic (not the Empire) so why don't we see much (or any) R1b U152 in this study?

This is probably the largest study on Iberian aDNA to date and reveals a lot more diversity than found in previous roman and visigothic era studies. It's hard to draw precise conclusions due to how much data there is, but broadly I notice that south east Iberia seems significantly more north african influenced than anywhere else. I also notice that the Erbo River basin would likely still average something close to modern Iberians, given that it has such a high proportion of individuals that retain total and near total iron age Iberian ancestry, even in spite of the outlying spread. Emerita Augusta by comparison looks more homogenous and basically shows only two different clusters - one being north/central european and the other being Iron age spaniard-like. Interestingly we see iron age like indidivuals even in the suebian era which implicates a local survival of this distinct ancestry in the hinterlands.

Based of what we know, from my perspective there had to have been some sort of local repeopleing of the full peninsula to reduce significant north african influence in places like the meseta and south east iberia. I find these Iron age types of samples in the visigothic era a likely source and I think places like Erbo River likely also played a large part here.

The most obvious conclusion is that the Roman period had a significant impact on Iberian genetics, it brought a significant demographic flow from people with ancestry from the Central and Eastern Mediterranean and from North Africa to central and southern Iberia. Ancestry from the Central and Eastern Mediterranean is the WestAnatolia_Roman_Byzantine component in the table that I posted above.

The Germanic peoples were few in number and were absorbed into the mass of the population leaving a small genetic contribution.

The dissemination of North African ancestry in the Roman period is impressive. Nevertheless, this ancestry would not have spread significantly to the north of the peninsula.
This North African ancestry will have increased during the Islamic period and the repopulation of the south/central Iberian Peninsula and the consequent reduction of this NA ancestry, referred by Vitruvius, occurred during the Reconquista and from northern areas where Iron Age ancestry predominated.

According to this study Iberians have these percentages of Iron Age related ancestry, nevertheless, it seems to me that these values of Roman related ancestry are too high for non-Basque Iberians.
I would say that Iron Age related ancestry represents the majority of Iberian ancestry.

This chart is from the 2021 Flores-Bello study of Basques.

How does it even define "Roman-related ancestry"...Iron Age or Imperial or mixed?

I saw they published it 12 hours ago, how quickly you found out!

In what province or city were these samples found?
