This is why I think some of this discussion on the Hajnal line is overblown. Yes, Americans predominantly live in nuclear families, although we're seeing that a lot of empty nesters are finding their grown children back on their doorstep, but even in very "mobile" America, the ties to family and "home" are strong.
With some of the bigger distance areas it's a function of the location itself. If you grew up with Mom in rural Wyoming, just to go to school or find a decent sized town for work you're going to have to travel quite a distance.
