I am posting this type of question on a few discussion groups, and I hope to hear your opinion.

The President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and the leading cleric in Iran Ayatollah Hashemi-Rafsanjani are both calling for the destruction of Israel, almost guaranteeing its destruction using nuclear bombs.

Of course, if this happens, the Palestinians would be destroyed, and the Syrians and Lebanese and Jordanians would also be injured and/or destroyed.

In balance to this information, the United States also made threatening rhetoric towards Iran and Syria, though I believe not nearly as harsh as Iran proclaimed against Israel.

There is also a strong possibility that the US and Bush "Evil Empire" descriptions against North Korea and Iran may have a basis in fact, that these countries are funding terror in Indonesia, Philipines, and spreading nuclear knowledge and material between each other.

What are you hearing from your part of the world? Are we really, really "on the brink" of another war?

Thank you for any input.

There is no way this is a signal of any war coming. Iranian and other leaders in the middle east are always promising to destroy Israel, its just empty rhetoric. They know Israel has enough firepower to wipe Iran off the map in the blink of an eye.

Still it's an interesting move by Iran. It won't help them much in negotiating for their nuclear program.

That it wont, and i dont think even the iranian regime is stupid enough to try and destroy isreal, and most of isreal's neighbours have already seen what the isreali army can do and have made their peace.

Still, when isreal stops occupying and opressing the palistinian people THEN i will feel overly inclined to shout down the usual iranian jihadist tripe.

As for the cospiracy theory that north korea and iran are in some knida terrorist supporting brotherhood, heh, thats cute but seriously, its odd how some people still take any note of this terrorist crap.

North korea are communist and isolationist for a start, they arnt involved in muslim terrorism.

The indonesian terrorists are most likely LOCAL and their motivations are due to the many ethnic tensions within indonesia (the actual idea of indonesian is a false one created by the netherlands when they pulled out and the following regime) and/or religious differences, i dont know why, and this isnt a slight against muslim folks, but in poorer parts of the worl, if theres a decent muslim population, there will be stupid jihadist punk kids with nothing better to do with themselves so they will listen to the closest extrimist cleric or imam, and go kill themselves for no reason.

Final thought of this post is this: terrorism is never going to be such a big threat, that it requires a war against it, you will NEVER defeat terrorism with guns and wars, that doesnt work, if anything the coalition's actions over recent years has only feuled terrorism and helped it grow.

Thank you all for your posts...

Nurizeko, you mention..."you will NEVER defeat terrorism with guns and wars, that doesnt work, if anything the coalition's actions over recent years has only feuled terrorism and helped it grow."

I agree. I have also heard (as a Barry, Curtin, Carlin, Bowie... I am half Irish on the Southern side, and Welsh, and Scot and Austrian and English, so I am told) that the IRA devolved into sort of a gun-running, drug dealing mafia of sorts, who for the longest time, fought peace initiatives... there was more money in making "troubles" than there was in seeking peace. I have also heard that from ex-Pres Clinton, that when terror groups such as the IRA found more "profit" in the political process, they gave up their terror ways in favor of "assimilating" and non-terror venues.

How can the world do the same for Islamic fundamentalists? Treat each local terror group individually, per their region of the world? Are you saying that Indonesian terror groups have aims different from Philipine Fundamentalists? (I am not disagreeing with you, I just frankly, am ignorant of the flavors of differences among the terror groups)

Excellent responses, thank you.

The time has maybe come for the Bush administration to seize this opportunity to lead a "preventive strike" on Iran to protect the Kingdom of Heaven, holy land of Israel that saw the birth and death of so many prophets, and above all humanity's great saviour, Jesus Christ, who died for us to repent for our (future) sins. The signal is clear; it comes directly from god - nuke the infidels !

(the irony is that they say exactly the same thing on the other side)

I love your ability to produce such understatements. :p

Inaction only fuels terrorism by emboldening them. What do you suggest we do? Yell "trick or treat" at them?

Slap their hands, of course. "You naughty jihadist!"

Another one of those "mother of all" threats they're so good at making.

I tend to agree ... but ...

I do begin to despair at any news of this kind that comes from the Middle east. I fear that it is only a matter of time before someone (and I use that word advisedly...) does do something totally stupid.

I suppose that we can only wait and see.

I have been waiting since 1947 .... technically (I wasn't aware of the problems there until some years later....).

?W???? :(

Armand V... your comment... "Inaction only fuels terrorism by emboldening them. What do you suggest we do? Yell "trick or treat" at them?"

America has been Inactive?
I have to give major credit to President Bush for trying to do SOMETHING, maybe a lousy implementation of that "SOMETHING", by the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq, but son of a gun, he did SOMETHING! America was comparatively "inactive for 30 years" from the Marine Barracks bombing in Beirut in the ??? 80s ??? to the Cole bombing.... We have now overstayed our welcome in Iraq, I sadly believe, but America became ACTIVE, while the forces of terror have only seemed to grow more widespread, more organized.

I actually think that America's ACTIONS in Iraq have galvinized the world terror movements, not the INACTIONS of America. Do bigger guns and more and more airstrikes make more friends? Apparently not.

Having said all this, what role has Iran played in world terror? Didn't they support Hezbollah in Syria? And how did this nation go from really impressing me a few months ago, to this brinkmanship, of threatening nuclear stikes?
