The Italian parliament has decriminalised possession of cannabis up to 1 gramme. Marijuana was already legal for medical use in the country.

Italy follows other Western European countries softening its laws on cannabis use. Cannabis use and possession up to a certain amount is already legal in the Netherlands (max. 30 g), Belgium (max. 3 g), Britain, Switzerland, Spain (max. 40 g, in private only) and Portugal (max. 40 g). The sale of cannabis is only legal (in licensed shops) in the Netherlands, UK (London only) and Switzerland.
