Here is some map showing the cities in Europe that have a metro with their logo. There are in total 60 European cities that have a metro system (as opposed to 13 cities in the United States and also 13 in Japan).

The second map shows the number of cities that have a tramway network in each country.

For the sake of comparison the United States has 30 cities with a tram system while Japan has about 20 of them. Those in Japan tend to be small and localised (just a few short lines).

The map shows that Belgium only has three cities with a tramway but the longest tramway line in the world (68 km) is actually in Belgium and runs along the Belgian seaside from the French to the Dutch border. That's not one city but many towns and villages connected with one another so it's not part of the statistics on the map above.

Here is a ranking of the best metro systems in Europe based on factors such as distance covered, annual ridership, passenger scores and share of positive/negative media reactions.

This article from Euronews explains the ranking.

I have experience with almost all the metro systems in Europe, but the one in Paris is so complicated. I used to spend a lot of time in that city, and it took me so many time to understand how it works.
And it's really expensive- 2.15 or 2.10 for a single ride
