We know very well the definition of a modern nation, which is a distinguished aggregate of people inhabiting a particular country or territory usually speaking the same language throughout that territory. Can we say the same, about the ancient nations? We have heard about Ancient Macedonians, Ancient Gauls, Ancient Illyrians, Ancient Hellenes, Ancient Epirotes and few other Mediterranean Ancient civilisations, what was the political context or the authority on the basis of these political entities/kingdoms:

1. An ethnic patriarch, who established a colony of people, his kinship by blood, language and culture, which expanded over time, by means of force, influence or alliances, making it preponderant among others.
2. A secular hegemon, ruling over people of different cultures and languages, but under the same taxation system
3. A religious patriarch, who rules over people of the same religion, but without a distinct ethnicity.

Which one applies toward the aforementioned races/cultures/states?
