The water is heavily polluted and we want you, mr athlete who spent most of your life training, to swim in it. Risk a horrible illness or wait an extra 4 years.

I'm speechless

would the anciant athletes have doped themselves?
if so, with what?

not a nice picture we get from Brasil, but the country is not in a nice state either

I've been watching the opening ceremonies: lovely visuals, great music and dance.

Now we're going to watch a lecture about global warming, caused by all those terrible first world countries.

You know what? I've had enough. Why didn't you pass on hosting this damn thing and use the money to start fixing your own backyard, like cleaning up your filthy coastline and lakes with their two million times the recommended level of pollution, so bad that our rowers have to wear protective suits and dip the oars in bleach.

The rooms have exposed wires, bathrooms are collapsing; it's like a huge Potemkin village.

I don't know if I can even watch it long enough to see the parade of nations.

Latin America is a mess.

Well, one cute thing: U.S. Swim Team-Car Pool Karaoke

The man who oversaw the construction of the hotel faced termination due to its unsafe living conditions.

Of course, I am watching it. They got me because of the swimming and the tennis. :)

Phelps, old man that he is at 31, can still bring it home. The U.S. swimming team is doing very well, as always, as is Australia. I was happy to see Detti get his bronze too. I was happy altogether to see the nice reception that both the U.S. and Italian teams got from the crowd. I'm sure part of the reason for the nice reception for the Italian team is because of how many Italians there are in Brazil, if not in Rio.

Quite the upsets in tennis. Wow, the Williams sisters out in the first round of the doubles. That must have hurt. I was very sorry for Novak Djokovic as well. Another top seed out in the first round. If you guys didn't catch it and like tennis, you should watch it. That was GREAT tennis. Someone should put the whole match up on youtube. I wish I had learned how to play when I was young, instead of just living vicariously through my children in that as in swimming. Well, I can swim, but nothing like them or these young people. It's just beautiful, and thrilling to watch, especially with all these underwater cameras. They're like human fish.

Kudos to the Hungarian swimmer for the medley too:

I don't watch gymnastics anymore because these little girls are almost deformed by their training.

Oh, congrats to Belgium for their cycling win.

Kudos to Lily King for winning the 100 meter breast stroke against Yulia Efimova. The whole Russian team should have been disqualified. This so and so got a sixteen month long suspension for doping and then dares to wag her finger at King pre-swim? Well, King got the last laugh. Brava...

The crowd at the tennis matches really should be told to keep it quiet. Haven't they ever been at one before? Those poor players.

Oh, and Piers Morgan should shut his mouth, while I'm at it. How dare he come down with his supercilious, ignorant comments on the poor girl who won a gold in the air rifle competitions. Just typical. Besmirch poor Ginny Thrasher's bright shining moment to make a cheap political point about gun violence in America. And no, Piers, not all gun owners and users are hillbilly morons. The girl is a bio-medical engineering student. How do you compare, in brains and athletic ability, not to mention common human decency?

to win such a race you have to be good and you need some luck
to bad for Nibali and Hennao who fell in the last descend
this time it was the lucky day for Greg

OLD MAN at 31?

OLD MAN at 31?

In swimming it's pretty darn old. I think he's already said this will be his last Olympics. It's not chance that so many of the Gold Medalists are 19, 20, 23.

It's unfortunate, but you have to commit really young if you're going to make a name for yourself in these sports. These kids are swimming five days a week, often at 6AM, because that's when the pools are free, when they're fourteen.

Goodness, another top seed is out: Serena Williams. Her French opponent certainly doesn't get my vote as the most sportsmanlike player ever, but she had grit, and Serena was off her game.

Lordy, the dive pool turned green. Who believes the officials that the water is perfectly safe?

Ok so it's relatively old for the Olympics. And the green water....this on top of the fact that they leveled people's homes to build the stadium. The committee who made the decision to destroy people's homes and businesses is pure evil and is part of the reason why I choose not to watch the olympics. If I were to express my true feelings in words about the committee that made the decision to wipe out those homes to make room for a stadium that may never be used again I would get an infraction from a moderator because it may be overly disturbing. Those individuals are evil and dark hearted.

My favorite swimming event-200 meter Individual Medley-Phelps/Lochte one and two...

OK, I have to say it...I'm good...I looked at Ryan Lochte and said to myself, he's got to be at least half Italian. Looked it up...half Cuban...close, as the white Cubans are almost all Southern European.

CNN headlines: There was no robbery. Frat boy attitude. I remember those 'panty raids' by the frat boys at university. I couldn't figure out what was so special about getting girls' panties at that time. Of course, I never smelled a girl's soiled panties. Maybe it would be a different story. LOL.

I know, this years Olympics is about as ridiculous as the elections. Did you read about the Russian boxer who got his butt kicked by his irish opponent and won? The Russian guy looked like he was crying in one photo. I was about to laugh when I read the Russian left because he couldn't continue to box other opponents. I'll have to read the details later btw.

Ha, ha. What can you expect from young men with high testosterone - especially athletes aiming for gold medals?

Here is a quote from the irish boxer who "lost":
“I’ll never box in this competition again. If people watch this Olympic Games and they see some of the decisions … I think boxing is dead. It’s about whoever pays the most money. Whoever has the biggest [influence] wins.”

This man is right. Thumbs up for speaking against the commission. They are corrupt pigs willing to level people's property for an event that lasts about two weeks. It's all about who pays the most f*****g money. But what can I expect from these pigs to begin with? They accepted Rio as an appropriate place to host the Olympics due to it's governments ability to pay the most amount of money that should've gone towards Brazil to begin with. Only 12 percent of the tickets were sold...gee I wonder? Maybe because hardly anyone would want to risk getting robbed or shot in a city full of crime?

THE IOC IS FULL OF CORRUPT PIGS. OINK

Brazil should have spent the billions on a more equitable society rather than a showy prestige project like the Olympics.

However if Latin America is a mess it is partly because the USA interferes in any regime that supports the poor or seems in any way Socialist.

Yes, next America is going to steal Santa Claus.

Of course, none of it has anything to do with the fact that Spain and Portugal drained these countries dry and mismanaged them for hundreds of years, and then after independence the same thing continued to happen under their home grown oligarchs. It was a paradise until the U.S. got involved.

As for the "Lochte affair", I finally saw footage of the press conference in Brazil. Something smells to high heaven. If a guy in uniform waves a gun in your face and asks for money, pardon me, but I'd think I was being robbed. I wouldn't go to Rio if they paid me to go...it's a hell hole where, from everything I've heard, it's not at all unusual for the "authorities" to hold you up for money. It's corrupt from top to bottom, and while the visuals may be pretty, you'd better get a massive dose of antibiotics before you put a toe in the water. So much for another one of the "next superpowers" of the world.

That said, Lochte's just another one of those man-boys who never grow up, a category which seems to be increasing by leaps and bounds in the developed world. This is how a thirty-two year old is till acting? In twenty years he'll be at some bar, with a hair piece or a comb over, a gut, and trying to hit up the twenty-year olds. Pathetic.

Whether Latin America was a paradise or not, badly ruled or not, no foreign power is allowed to intervene in their affairs unless that power is called in by the legitimate government.

No outside power, the USA included, has the right to intervene if a rebel faction calls it in.

If there is no legitimate government, however we wish to define "legitimate", all outside powers should butt out.
